Wow, the new Porcupine Tree is quite heavy!

I've only heard "Lazarus"... which is quite a lush ballad... no signs of heaviness... the 2 b-sides are great as well.

As for Opeth... I think "Deliverance" is a great work... I prefer the more "groove-oriented" Opeth to the noodling Opeth of yesteryear.

Ok, I'm giving this a listen, and to be honest, i wasn't expecting heavy, rocking riffs like the one at the beginning of Shallow, and a bunch of other ones in Shallow.

Not "OMHG LETZ PLAY AN OPETH RIFF~``11~!11" heavy like the first track off In Absentia. This, I like a bit. Vocals don't fit the music tbh, but it sounds ok.

I find it so strange that people normally into experimental/prog stuff prefer Opeth's simpler period, and the anti-prog types prefer their early period. Seems really strange.

Wasn't much that was proggy about the earlier period, maybe wanking bass, long songs and lack of much structure excepted.

Now they have that Steven Wilson guy :zombie:

I just prefer better music, hence my liking for the early stuff. Yeah. :)

Is Steve Wilson the fifth member yet?

I still haven't heard that Porcupine Tree album called Damnation, though.

i'd say don't waste your time.. it's not a bad listen when you want something relaxing, but it's short and not particularly excellent.
haha, mike akerfeldt's solo on this PT song sounds exactly like something out of damnation.

I attribute that partly to the vocals, without that obstacle Damnation was able to bring in some prog fans who ordinarily would be scared off by any mention of death metal elements. But that's not entirely true, I've seen lots of prog fans speak highly of the first three Opeth albums...
