Anybody have any more updates or observations regarding the Axefx? I'm considering getting one, but justifying the cost is VERY HARD. Also, do you guys have the Ultra ($2k) or regular unit ($1500). Thanks.

I must say while I love Cynic, dig the tone on their new record, and like a lot of the Axe clips I've heard, their live mix was pretty crappy in NYC the other night. The leads sounded ok, but the rhythms just sounded baddd.

Old thread is old.. but i would like to hear more about this as well.

Also, since im really interested in getting a axe FX.. i keep hearing about the feel of it and how it resembles a tube amp.
One problem i have with the POD XT, is that with my favourite patches i struggle to do palm mutes and keeping sustain.. is this improved/better with the axe fx?

the axefx sounds like a fancy shmancy pod to me :-P i could be wrong though, never tried one..some guys seem to have mastered its uses and others that have them seems like they just bought them because they thought it was a 'give me tone now' miracle cure. I want djent<3

Not much of an Axe FX know-it-all here, but what do you mean 'do palm mutes and keep sustain'? Do you mean like doing a palm mute that does the crazy low-end tail thing?

To cover again what I brought up before, I talked to Paul after Cynic played with Dragonforce/DAATH. He said everything is completely direct, live - just AxeFX. He also said they used Carvin Legacy cabs on the album, he mentioned this after asking me what rig I used and told him what cabs I used.

The only reason they have as much of a rack as they do have onstage is the big monitor mixer for thier in-ears that takes up most of the rack.

This was about the best pic I could get of it.

Yeah, the chugga chugga stuff you know? on most patches they sound weak as fuck on my POD XT/Gibby combo.
And when i do that on a 5150 or a randall combo, it sounds full like it should be.. i wonder if this is the case on the Axe FX as well.

Well, I got the Ultra about five months ago and it's everything I could have dreamed of and more. I've spent the last six months developing an approach to using the Axe live with my Engl Invader (and dialing it in). I've had much success with this and have played three live shows. I can easily switch between the Axe, my Engl, or a combination of both using ONLY the poweramp section of my Engl (no external power amp needed for my setup). However, I do not go direct into the PA for two reasons: I love the sound of my Engl and I don't trust sound guys. Now I'm starting to dive into the recording stuff, which is totally different, mainly in terms of sound.

In short, the extra $500 for the Ultra is WELL worth it.
