I only have two candidates for Album of the Year 2004.

#1) Ayreon - The Human Equation

#2) Orphaned Land - Mabool

Still not sure what order they go in, but I'm hitting both albums pretty hard trying to decide. Overall, I think Ayreon beats OL simply because of the vast scope/interaction of the story/characters and all-star cast of singers. But Mabool might just have the greatest music I've ever heard during the second half of the album. I just love all that instrumental jam with all the style and tempo changes. Those oriental and middle-eastern folk infuences really tickle my eardrums.

My top 10 list (in no order) would go something like...

1) orphaned land - mabool
2) Dargaard - rise and Fall
3) Within temptation - the Silent Force
4) Riverside - out of Myself
5) Deathspell Omega - Si monumentum Requires Circumspice
6) Dead soul Tribe - The January tree
7) Drudkh - Autumn Aurora
8) Void of Silence - Human Antithesis
9) Insomnium - Since the day it all came down
10) lake of tears - black brick road

How could I have left out Opeth? Stupid, stupid me!
Yeah, I read about that album of Mr. Oliva. To which of the older albums would yoiu compare it? I'm hoping you'll say Streets- cause I love it to pieces!

It has a little of everything. Some moments remind me of the more modern day Poets and Madmen (production and bombast), but most of it harkens back to the Streets/Gutter Ballet days (including a couple of Criss's old song riffs that were never released) and some of it even goes back to Power of the Night and Dungeons (including dusting off Mr. Killdrums, their original drummer, on a couple of tracks). In fact, there are parts of the album that closely resemble Jon and Caffery's solo project, Doctor Butcher. Fast, aggressive, in your face! It's just a killer album all the way through.

Their crowds aren't all gone, Lanthwick! They got rave reviews at ProgPower USA this year (Technically it was Jon Oliva's Pain that appeared there, but some of the Savatage alumni showed up too).

If you buy 'Tage Mahal, Morticia, let me know what you think!
