yo do you think you could go for a year without buying anything except food/medicine

I've moved many times in my life. I've been at the current spot 2.5 years, which is the longest I've lived anywhere since I left home for college. I literally move every 1-2 years.

Therefore I've trashed unwanted shit every 1-2 years.

The only non essential things I spend money on are booze, books and music. About once a year Ill consider getting some guitar/synth stuff but my expenditure on "big" things has all but disappeared. On the topic, thanks to NAD for making me aware of the masterpiece that is Ambrose Bierce's The Devils Dictionary.

Isn't that amazing?! I haven't laughed that hard since rediscovering Vonnegut as a pseudo grownup.

I wrestle with the human nature of collecting. We make terrible nomads, as we define ourselves with the CRAP that we enjoy possessing (cars, houses, music, shoes, toys, tools, land, people, books, dildos, plants, chairs, food, etc.), but sometimes I look at it all and think "why does any of this matter?" because all I really need is basic clothing, water, and some Clif bars. But then desire kicks in, and since our minds are so feeble, we can't just sit there and be content with our own thoughts every minute of every day, so we.............hoard..............things................that..........are..........stuff.

It's weird. Oh well.

Triple post:

Saw a fascinating documentary in college, if you can find it, it is worth the viewing:

Ah, here it is, the magick of YouBoob:

I haven't watched it in 15 years, will again tonight! After I get back from my unpaid gig, whereupon I will pilot an $18,000 car filled with $5,000 worth of music gear and my wife (whom I also OWN).

The back of my Vulva is filled with stuff I'm taking to Goodwill. I don't know where most of it even came from.

a truth that has taken me far too long to figure out:

it is so much easier to acquire things than to get rid of them

I've reduced my spending a bit this year, but I'm still living the stupid modern life.

I make over 20k MORE now than I made last year but am somehow more poor than ever.

So fuck it

Just signed a lease for a new dwelling! Moving from the woods to the beach. Will be a welcome change of pace, its a cool house in a far more practical location. No longer will I slave away as the groundskeeper of a 10 acre property.

My point being, we have only sorted through about 20% of our belongings and we threw out THREE garbage cans full of useless shit. Old appliances, magazines, useless video game accessories, etc. Total insanty. Looking forward to a clean, somewhat-empty house.

Btw, the amount unsolicited paper we receive in the mail is just fucking crazy! What a shameful waste, and a nuisance.
