Your 2010 TOP TEN LIST

I guess it's kinda hard to define exactly what makes for a must-have, though having listened to the BG album again, it's definitely on up there with the definite bests of the year, and as it stand I will probably listen to it a good deal more than I would nearly any of BG's previous albums. definitely ranks up there among their best material IMO. If it keeps my attention for a few more months it might even shake up my status quo of Traveler-Transition-Thundersteel trifecta of Power metal albums that get more rotation than anything else I have.

It's got nothing to do with technicalities or semantics. This is not a "must haves of 2010 list thread" but a top 10 of 2010 list thread. It's where we list what we think are our favorite albums of the year. Considering that everyone's tastes are different, I don't even see how a "must haves list" would work, so it's a moot point. And I don't know about you, but I couldn't live with myself if new music started ceasing after a certain point. I always look for what's new and interesting as well as proudly spinning the stuff I liked in the past. Don't let nostalgia and sentimental attachments get the better of you and CERTAINLY don't assume that "anybody else" could do without new music either. :D

Well, maybe there are some inside business dealings I am not aware of which has resulted in their not getting as much of a push as others.

I mean, they have been extremely consistent for many years now.
I actually favor their more recent output to their classic releases.
They have been on decent labels.
They don't tour a TON, but they do play bigger fests, and select one-offs.

Certainly touring more would help.

Well, there are always inside business stuff going on that the public don't see .. but I was actually aiming at other stuff which is pretty obvious...

Problem 1: the band has a good thing going with their first couple of albums, but for some reason they thought they could become the new Scorpions and released that horrible Digger album. What an abomination, and they lost a lot of fans and momentum. When they came back as GD, it took all up until "Tunes Of War" for them to win back the lost ground, and at that point the other bands of their time (Helloween, Running Wild, Blind Guardian, Rage) had surpassed them by leaps and bounds.

Problem 2: Yeah, but they haven't stayed with one label consistently. It really matters in this business if you're with a label who continues to believe in you ...

Actually, they tour a lot. After each album they've done quite big European tours.

The fact that no one in the US cares about them enough to want to see them on a US tour is a different issue. They did their one-off NYC show a few years ago with only 100-150 people or so ... not a success by any means.
 
Oh man, I didn't even know about that Digger record. Haven't listened to anything yet because I don't have speakers at work, but that picture...my god....

While I did say that no one takes notice, I do understand why they aren't the most popular. While I personally like the vocals because they're different, a lot of people don't. I think that's the major reason more than anything else.

I think Disturbed's sound is quite unique. When you hear it, you know it's Disturbed or a lesser band ripping them off. And it seems that the more distinct a band's sound is, especially if it's an easily accessible sound, then the more likely it is that their songs will sound similar to one another.

It seems many people who dislike Disturbed, acknowledge the vocals are fairly strong. However, I'm not sure why the guitar player doesn't get similar kudos. While I appreciate he's not exactly Jorn Viggo, he's quite good at creating memorable riffs and melodic leads (especially on the last two discs). Certainly better than most of the players in the FM Rock space that I've heard.

I would agree with this, but seriously? Are Running Wild or RAGE really any more popular than Grave Digger? I honestly don't know, but just going by general online discussions and reviews, I would say those three have always been equals in my book. Hell, I bet Jorg Micheal would agree!! :)

Eh, I think a lot of people dislike them, esp in the metal community, as they have zero credibility as a metal band. Period. Right or wrong, that immediately turns them off for a lot of people. For me personally, I just simply think they suck, all the way around. I think musically it is about as insulting as Blink 182. Sure, they might write radio friendly rock that is memorable, but that's not what I want from a metal or even a hard rock band. A classic rock band, maybe, but even the classic rock bands I like are more unique than that. (Well, except for KISS).

Yeah, Rage and Running Wild were more popular than Grave Digger (and Rage still are...).

As a US metal fan, those three have seemed to always be the same in popularity.

Ah well. Regardless, I still think GD kick out the jams.
