I don't think there's been a thread about this yet, but I gotta say, I know a lot of you are die-hard chuggers, but nothing moves me like an incredible guitar solo, and I figure I could use this as an opportunity to learn about more! Just to put it out there from the get-go, however, I DESPISE wanking - fast runs are awesome and totally dandy, but I define "wanking" as when they're played without any sense of tempo or phrasing - that's almost always an instant "pass" from me. In fact, I would go so far as to say pretty much all of my favorite soloists play entirely in-time, with only the occasional stretching of it for an expressive section (which I can totally get down with). Basically, I love solos to be a melody! (anyone who's heard how I play would agree, I think ;) - there's a couple of quick guest solos I've done for people on here in the soundclick player on my myspace if anyone wants to hear! Also, "Song for my Parents" was a big solo'ing tour de force for me as well)

So anyway, I would say at this point my favorite soloist is definitely Per Nilsson from Scar Symmetry (partly cuz I only got into 'em recently, but also cuz he FUCKING RULES). I've never heard a player that could play so fluidly, even when alternate-picking, it's just unbelievable, and the solos in "Underneath the Surface," "Veil of Illusions," "Obscure Alliance," and the ALMIGHTY solo section "Ghost Prototype I" are just amazing. I think one of my favorite of his techniques is the way he'll play a note and then slide to the same note, it gives a really cool sound - example:

And besides him, I really love Alexi's solos, as well as Petrucci (the solos in LTE's "Biaxident" are just so gorgeous and soaring), Peter Wichers, and Jani Limataiinen from Sonata Arctica (though he needs to work on his vibrato and throw away the Pod :Smug: ). Also Akerfeldt for his AMAZING vibrato and feel, and even though I've only heard him on Watershed, Fredrik Akesson's solos on that album are fucking amazing as well. And of course, the 80s guys like Neal Schon and George Lynch just wail and I love every minute of it :D Ooh, and Dave Suzuki's stuff in Vital Remains is amazing (too bad all the rest of the music outside the melodic/groovy breaks is so painfully boring :erk: )

Yeah, that guy is pretty damn good - from about 1:15 on though it just degenerates into worse and worse wanking in the sense I described above, but since I assume he's improvising this (at least somewhat) and this is meant to show of his chopz, I can tolerate it. And words can describe how revolting I find that tone :ill:

So it was a permanent departure, then? At the time it seemed like it was only temporary so he could serve his military service, too bad

You might want to skip to about 3:20 if you want to get straight into the action:

Besides IA and Thordendal, I also dig Bumblefoot and Buckethead. The "old school" guys I dig most are Allan Holdsworth (not really into his music, but the leads are :worship:), Paul Gilbert and Eric Johnson. Oh, and Sugizo is awesome! I never really got into X Japan so I don't know a lot about hide, but I really dig Sugizo's style, especially how he uses the trem:

And as a bonus, a clip featuring a still relatively unkown Finnish guitarist Matias Kupiainen and my friend Risto Kupiainen on keys:

And no, they're not related  I think Matias is in Stratovarius now.

I also recently discovered Scar Symmetry and I must agree that Per's solos are amazing, I really like his solos on "Deviate from form".

I don't have a particular favorite, there are many guitarists that I like their solos for various different reasons. I'm going to mention one of the less obvious ones, Thomas Vetterli from coroner. He plays some absolutely amazing solos without using insane speeds and technigue. Here's one of his best:

Also, one of my favorite solos that comes to mind in conversations like these is Bobby Koelble's solo on "Perennial Quest" from the Death's "Symbolic" album. Really unique.

And lastly, we can officially end this thread with this :):

I think Peter Wichers has more soul and feel to his solos than any kind of music I've ever listened to, and its not retarded scale shredding the whole time (All That Remains...etc) but he can pick up the pace when needed and tap some faces off :)

Just about every solo on Chainheart Machine gives me chills. Especially Machine Gun Majesty...god damn amazing cd all the way through.

Kinda hard to answer, so many to choose from... generally, if a solo shows emotion and fits the song, I'm going to like it.

But here are some of my fav guitarists who never disappoint in the soloing department: Mikael Åkerfeldt, Alex Skolnick, Michael Romeo.

I also really like the stuff Matthew Pigott recorded so far, like Shred Fiasco:

Oh, and then there's Steve Morse... I wish I was rich and could buy his Engl signature amp just for the beautiful lead tone (of course much is in the hands, but I still loved the amp when I tried it out).

Psshh, I love 'em man, I've been rockin' 'em for years! I just like some kind of facial hair, but I DESPISE having hair on my chin, so that rules out any kind of beard. And those Daath solos are pretty wild, never really heard of the guy before, but he's definitely got a really cool thing going on! Maybe a bit of a case of "too many notes, sire" but at least he plays them all in time!

Thanks everyone else for the suggestions, I'll check 'em out!

And specifically for Marcus: Uli Jon Roth & The Sky Orchestra, featuring a gorgeous blond woman on upright bass. :worship:

My Favorite solo of all time is Randy Rhoads solo in the Tribute live version of Crazy Train, i feel goosebumps just to hear ir, not complicated or fancy, but sounds as a solo need to sound and it don`t need anything as backing just the bass and the drums, the solo itself fulllfil that part of the song, Thats a solo.

Talking about soloist, i really like Kiko Loureiro from Angra, very Vai influenced, but with his own spice.

I pretty much love anything with Kai Hansen on it ... as for specific solos, hard to say cause I like so much of what he does and how he plays but a couple that stick out are his solos in the songs "Abyss of the Void" & "Man on a Mission" both from the "Land of the Free" disc.

another badass is Kristian Niemann from Therion ... although I think he's not with them anymore. Check out any solo he does on Therion's "Secret of the Runes" disc and you'll hear why
