Your favorite solos/soloists

"too many notes, sire"

"There are as many as necessary, no more and no less."

My favorite movie ever.

Soloists I like:
Michael Romeo
Oli Herbert
Petrucci obviously
Jeff Loomis
Paul Gilbert
Satriani
The dude from Daath is pretty fuckin raunchy as well.

Basically what I did with my life was blend all those dudes styles into a protein shake, drank it and made it a bit sloppy and that's me hahahaha.:loco:

Definitely not a flashy player but I love how Mike Akerfeldt from Opeth plays. Shredwise, I love listening to Per Nilsson rip it up.

Ze kink, I really didn't like what he played in that vid, but I've heard plenty of great stuff by Eklundh to know he's the fucking man (though I've never really been emotionally moved by one of his solos, but haven't heard anything besides the first "Freak Guitar" album either). But eek, not a fan of that X Japan guy's solo, too disjointed and a pretty awful flow IMO - when it comes to Japanese guitarists IMO you can't beat Tak Matsumoto! :worship: (and The B'z fucking RULE). And holy fuck, that Matias Kupiainen guy is nuts, especially for playing it on a PRS; not a guitar I usually associate with crazy shreddage! I do think he'll fit in perfectly in Stratovarius, though :D

Keregioz, I dunno how you define insane speed and technique, but that Coroner guy had some pretty legato fast runs in there! Not a big fan of that solo though, it's cool but a bit wanky/meandering for my tastes. And that Pink Floyd solo is ridiculously epic; once again pretty meandering, but it fits their music I'd say. Still, I usually like a bit more structure.

Fifth Horseman, oh my fucking god dude, that Uli John Roth vid is one of the cheesiest fucking things I've ever seen  Pretty cool though, and definitely some bangin' orchestra members! (I'm sure the audition notice read "homely hoes need not apply" :D)

Per Nilsson seriously pwns everyone. Crazy solos. Kinda cool mix between IA and Shawn Lane, imo, weird phrasings mixed with smooth, clean and godly licks. I'm definitely going to check Scar symmetry some more! Thanks

Dude, Bernhard, I can only assume you really haven't heard much Petrucci if your first response is puking - sure, he's definitely been prone to wanking, and is more than capable of shredding his nuts off (which I guess is often construed as a bad thing), but by and large I've always thought of him as a very tasteful, melodic, and emotional player - if you don't like this then I really don't know what to tell you - such soaring note choice and expresiveness, I love those arpeggios and that little sextuplet run, damn...

Big +1 to Angra's Kiko Loureiro. Although not exactly an innovator, it's his huge repetoire in a power metal band that is simply awesome. On Angra's Temple of Shadows, there's flamenco classical guitar, Holdsworth-ish jazzy lines, Stanley Jordan-ish jazz tapping, orgasmic 80s-ish melodic shredding, and even thrashish riffing! This may seem over the top as I'm describing it but it's all very tasteful, let me tell you...

Other modern-day favourites are Jorn from Pagan's Mind, Mats Haugen from Circus Maximus, Kristian Niemann from Therion, Henrik from Evergrey, Pablo Alvarez and Sebastián Vergara from Coprofago (AMAZING Chilean Tech Death), Ron Jarzombek, Rusty Cooley. Yes, I love prog/power metal!

A big +1 to Mats Haugen (Circus Maximus), Per Nillson, and Petrucci. And like you Marcus, I have to mention Neal Schon. But for personal favorites that helped influence and shape my playing:

George Lynch - "Into The Fire", "Heaven Sent", and "The Hunter"
Tony MacAlpine - "Key To The City", "I Can See It In Your Eyes" (skip ahead to 1:45)

Vivian Campbell - "Rainbow In The Dark" (made me realize the power of the minor scale), "Last In Line" (opened my eyes to a lot of things)

And I have to mention a fantastic local guitarist, Joel Gregoire from the (now defunct) band Stride. A really tasteful blend of melody, note choice, and controlled shred.

Wow Mark, that MacAlpine song is really fucking good, and has some fantastic playing - thanks for that dude!

EDIT: And if you haven't already, check out the Tak Matsumoto clip I linked to earlier, I really dig it!

This is like asking a man why does he like a woman (him being straight). This would be an endless thread. Its a matter of how you sense the solo at the moment it's first heard. Being at the right place at the right time

Just watched that clip Marcus. And you're right. That's a great solo! Exactly the kind of stuff I like. I'll have to look for more of this guy. But curse you for making me see that singer run around in leopard underwear!!! LOL

Blues Saraceno is bad ass he puts everything into his playing. I went to a clinic years a go and when he gets into it, it looks like he forgets to breathe. When you get picked to do a mini tour with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker you kick ass.
