I know it varies from type to type but I'm curious where you play the mutes.

E.g. look at the picture and tell me where you play them and why (more attack, tightness, more low-end ...)

I found that I play them between 7 and 7.5, more closer to the neck pub for a nice balance of punch and tightness.

for live situation my palm is exactly shortly after the bridge for getting a fatter tone. the studio guy from our first album said the tone gets clearer going away from the bridge. This absolutly makes sense to me. besides, my pic is two fingers way from my palm ;) hehe.
no for real I'll try to nail pinch harmonics with the pic. nice ones are on 7 on my guitar (esp viper)

For me it really depends on the song. Sometimes in one song I'll use 2 or 3 different positions. Sometimes one sec to the next. For a strait basic "metal" thing I tend to go as close to the bridge as possible.

I generally have my hand right on top of the saddles so in that regard it'd be 1 or less. I play a Floyd Rose equipped fiddle and for the sake of tuning stability you kinda gotta be conscientious of where you rest your hand so you don't push the bridge sharp. My pick winds up around 7.5 or 8 just due to my hand size I guess. I pick pretty hard all the time too.

Exact opposite, farther away from the bridge is muddier because the strings vibrate more freely - just strum the strings openly in the middle of the neck and right next to the bridge and you'll see

isn't closer to the bridge = muddier tone?

That would seem to be a logical observation but if I move my hand out over the bridge pickup I get a rise in pitch. The muting is tighter closer to the neck but with the rise in pitch and my muting not being muddy as it is I don't do it that way. I guess it's all in the technique and how you adapt to your instrument. I've been playing my MusicMan Silhouette for 13 years so I pretty much know it like it's part of me. Your guitar sound is a big part of it too.
