Why do many people in 2011, who have used a computer all their life, still don't know the existence of compressed .zip or .rar archives ? I have put 400 jpg pictures inside a .rar, on a html page with a quick explication for internet noobs to uncompress them, and a link to 2 softwares for both windows and apple in case they discover it.

And I still receive messages like : "I knew it was gonna be complicated, I can't open it, help ?" or "please put them on facebook, much more practical and less complicated"

I mean, seriously, .zip and .rar have been everywhere since the beginning of ages, and I have learnt how to open them when I was 8 or 10, and I'm no genius.

- right clic > extract here or .../folder
- done

I won't go on the "why do still people don't understand why installing a .exe setup will install 10 crappy internet browser bars toolbars if they don't untick the option, or even don't have the idea to right clic to remove them" cause I'm too tired to type a second rant :)

Because the majority of people in this world are morons. Enough explanation right there, and I feel your pain.

lol. one time i sent a few wavs in a zip file to a kid that supposedly had a 4 year degree in "computer science"

and he didnt know what it was or how to open it. unbelievable.

Oh, I remember back in the days of DOS where I had to put a bunch of modifiers on the command line to compress stuff to spread them across floppy discs. I remember RAR compressing much more than ZIP...

Anyway, I recommend 7zip. It´s free, easy to use and if I think it´s open source.

It's the people who still haven't grasped the idea using google to learn something/troubleshoot before posting about it. Those people wind me up.

reminds me of my oldest sister and my dad. theyre fucking retarded with this kind of thing. thing is.. they dont even TRY to figure it out, but just ask you to help. my other sister and i however, figured that shit out in 2nd grade

Lol... Pkunzip?
THOSE were the days.... NOT

What kills me is when people zip/rar/sitx/ect hundreds of files and they don't put them in a folder first. You end up with files stacked up on one another covering your whole damn desktop.

Why do people in 2011 still use Internet Explorer 6? Why do people use IE full stop? Guess same reason. On the other hand, working in IT for people who are completely retarded when it comes to computers can be very entertaining sometimes. I could write 10 pages about that.

Anyone else here use Total Commander? I learned how to use it when I was a kid (it was called Windows Commander back then) because my older brother did and honestly I can't look back. It makes all kinds of file/folder/etc. manipulations so easy and time saving that I can't say enough good words about it. It can open any archive as if it's a normal folder but that's just one of the many awesome things about it. The multi-rename tool rules and the sheer amount of possibilities and customization should satisfy anyone unless they are looking for some shiny Apple-looking piece of software.

Please do!
Ok, here is one: I work for a big company as web developer. So this girl from customer services calls and says that apparently people are having problems ordering an item online and their computer goes really slow (the item in question is fairly big sized) so we told her that that is probably down to the big size of the items and it's taking up too much bandwidth when you put the item in the basket. We thought she would kind of get the joke but no, she went back to the customer and told them word by word what we have told her.
