After tracking down the new album, I agree with Djabthrash. It seems to me like they spent too much time perfectly replacing drum hits and not enough time processing the samples and actually crafting the overall sound. I really like The Whisper Supremacy as well.

The most important for metal production: Kick beater @ 4-6k. You need to sweep around and find the sweet spot.

if youre recording digitally, there is no nice clipping. only horrid distortion. if you want a nice, "vintage" distortion, record to tape and hit the tape a little hard. tape compression, if done right, will sound nice.

smart-tool is an all-in-one tool: it selectes audio, you can grab and drop entire regions, you can trim regions, etc. it basically changes what kind of tool it is based on where your mouse is or what PT thinks you're trying to do with the audio.

i've never used Audix, however i may purchase the audix kickdrum mic...the samples ive heard have been really nice. as for toms, e604s on racks and 421 on floor. otherwise, use 604s on everything. or 421s. 604s are easier because you dont need any stands (as stated above).
