What equipment I need for mastering albums?

Read "Mastering Audio" by Bob Katz if you're seriously interested in mastering. That being said, you need a good tuned room with some nice mastering-specific monitors. The few mastering places I've been have all had the Waves MaxxBCL unit, Massive Passive and Vari-Mu as well as a Finalizer. One...

live sound: Which is the best mic position? (with only one guitar)

How big is the venue? If its for just a few hundred people, you may consider not micing your cab as I bet it gets plenty loud without the aide of some microphones. That being said, put one 57 on axis and one 57 off axis on your cab. Pan hard left and hard right and you're done. If it...

    Your very *favourite* metal production?

I'm sure it's been said, but.... At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul Holy balls. Could metal production get any better? The drums are, in my opinion, the best drum sounds I've ever heard (metal or not). The toms, kick, and snare are just amazing. The guitars are thick without being...

recommend me a plugin compressor for vocals

Fuck presets. Dial in the sound separately for everything. Presets are how music becomes cookie-cutter. I really like the Sonalksis suite as well as the Oxford and all the McDSP stuff. If you need to go on the cheap (assuming you're buying the software, right?) get the Massey CT4 as...

Cryptopsy Drummers Talks Tracking New Album

After tracking down the new album, I agree with Djabthrash. It seems to me like they spent too much time perfectly replacing drum hits and not enough time processing the samples and actually crafting the overall sound. I really like The Whisper Supremacy as well.

Help for Metal Camp Stage Plot! (Gavin & Co.)

I think -Noodles- is probably correct. When I see stage plots, it's typically 50/50 as to how they're drawn up. Sometimes its from the bands perspective so the drums are in the back (would be at the bottom on a piece of paper) with the amps while the sidefills/wedges/vocal mics are at the front...

how to achieve nice vocal "clipping" -no metal

if youre recording digitally, there is no nice clipping. only horrid distortion. if you want a nice, "vintage" distortion, record to tape and hit the tape a little hard. tape compression, if done right, will sound nice.

Why is PT considered the best for editing audio?

smart-tool is an all-in-one tool: it selectes audio, you can grab and drop entire regions, you can trim regions, etc. it basically changes what kind of tool it is based on where your mouse is or what PT thinks you're trying to do with the audio.

How many of you guys went to school for Audio Engineering?

if the school busts you getting paid, all studio rights are revoked. and that would suck.

    Best cheap mics for toms

i've never used Audix, however i may purchase the audix kickdrum mic...the samples ive heard have been really nice. as for toms, e604s on racks and 421 on floor. otherwise, use 604s on everything. or 421s. 604s are easier because you dont need any stands (as stated above).
