Personally I cant growl all that low, I am not a great singer but my singing voice is quite high and I think that has something to do with it. The vocals on Mournful Congregation's The Monad of Creation are extremely low and slow as are most growls in Funeral doom.

Forget Not and Tapestry of a Starless Abstract. There are also a few equally epic bootlegs not on The Aurora Veil like Of The Leper Butterflies.

Cant recommend you starter packs but I definetely second Nissan on Pain of Salvation. Opeth are also a great recommendation and if you like power metal perhaps try Symphony X or Ayreon as a couple of progressive bands that lend themselves to that audiance.

Nothing tops the climax to As Icicles Fall by Ne Obliviscaris except possibly one of the two other songs from Ne Obliviscaris's EP The Aurora Veil, you may need to wait 10 minutes for it given most of the songs go for 12 minutes but it is well worth it.

Fear Factory - Soul of a new machine A lot of short, fast, industrial death metal songs. It has grind running through it a bit but I would not call it anything like Napalm death by a long shot.

Any names of bands? I wouldn't mind checking that out, I would imagine the idea would lend itself to some interesting backing percussion as well.

Sunn are quite good, their recent Australian tour with Attilla from Mayhem was incredible, however a band I prefer musicially, though Sunn put on a better spectacle is KTL. Its very extreme, computer orientated with black metal running right through it but I would still hazard to call it drone.
