10 Most Harmful Books of the 19th and 20th Centuries

Lovecraft said the Necronomicon was written by the Mad Arab, the whole thing is pure fiction. I have the Necronomicon and trust me, it is INSANELY stupid. The Satanic Bible on the other hand is pretty nifty, an idealogue that some dude made up and stuck the name Satanism on it. There are some so-called Satanic rituals therein, and discussion of the nature of Satan as viewed by Christianity ("the devil has kept the church in business" or something to that effect), but yeah, it's not really a devil worship handbook.

Really? I thought he expressed the ideas, but later communist societies twisted them (crushing all opposition in the false name of the workers, for example).
The idea of a dictatorship was not part of Marx' Communism, but yes the foundation of the proletariat revolution was from Marx. It was quickly bastardized, and it's not really fair to blame Marx for the Soviet Union. Soviet Union wasn't necessarily bad because of the communism, it was bad because of the dictatorship.

Capitalism never called for the exportation of American jobs, just as Marxism never called for the Dictatorship of the Proletariat.
True. The way the paragraph was written sounded like they were saying capitalism was some perfect wonderful system, which obviously it isn't, due to the whole exploitation bit that is currently happening. But you're right, you caught me in a contradiction of sorts. :p

So is there any fiction on this list? Several I haven't heard of, but the ones I know are all political/economic/philosophy books, I'm surprised at the lack of fiction.

Several of the books I've read over the past year have been banned at certain times, labeled obscene by political leaders, shit even one made it to the US Supreme Court as being too vile to be considered art (Naked Lunch).

I'd also be curious what the most dangerous books by a left-wing/liberal/whatever group would be. Probably history books that say we won the Vietnam and Korean Wars. :loco:

Actually, The Satanic Bible was plagiarized from Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged

True that, especially considering that Atlas Shrugged itself is a dangerous book in the wrong hands.

Also, Ulysses was banned upon release, as was The Grapes of Wrath. Perhaps conservatives fear what made those books so frightening upon first release?

What about James Baldwin's Giovanni's Room? A book by a black homosexual author about an American expatriate having a homosexual love affair with an Italian?

They probably still use it to light their bonfires...it's everything they're against.

I'm entirely sure that only nonfiction was considered, or else it would contain every major politicial allegory of the last century. As for what a liberal list would look like, I'm sure there would be some overlap (Mein Kampf), but lefties usually aren't into calling books dangerous unless they contain propaganda from the other side.

Even then, I don't understand the idea of calling a book "dangerous"; either the ideas in it are shit which will be made apparent by reading the book, or there's something to be learned from it.
