1176 Compressor

Anyone know where to find a PCB to build an 1176?

Tough one.

You could give funky junk london a ring.

Whatever you build, it's not going to sound like an original 1176, because the original op amps are not made anymore.

why don't you buy one? you can get the re-issue at a pretty decent price in the second hand market. It does not sound the same as the old ones though, sorry I'm stuborn and I insist :kickass:

Best re-issue is meant to be the puple MCsomething, which I have not tried.

Probably my fave compresor.

I have to agree with Gomez on that one. The 1176 plugin is pretty bad.

The real 1176 is my favorite mono compressor ever.

Definetly check out the re-issues man. Building one can be a fun/frustrating project, but if you want as close to that sound as you can get you should just get a reissue. The purple MC76 is pretty decent unit, but I have no problem getting the sound I want out of the UA reissue.

Another thing you can try if you really want that sound, is www.ebay.de. I find that this site has a hell of alot more good gear than the US ebay. Just a thought.

I'm not trying to be a snob or anything, but you really can't compare the original to the plug.

I'm not against plugins either. I think they are very handy. Some of you may have noticed I like analog stuff. I don't think analog is better than digital, they are different (just to clarify)

I can think of several big-name engineers that completely disagree with you guys in your negative opinion about the UAD-1 1176 plugin, FYI. Maybe the problem isn't the plugin. :goggly:

Like who? I don't know about the UAD-1 version, but the Bomb Factory one stinks badly.

i'm not a huge 1176 fan as it is, its cool for some stuff. but i gotta strongly disagree about the bombfactory plugin, it can be pretty fucking good man.

The UAD-1 version is definitely better than the BombFactory version, but experienced engineers have told me and colleagues of mine they've used both to great results on major albums.

I have to say that the UAD versions are far superior to the Bomb Factory plug; although I do think BF's is a decent compressor- just not quite worthy of bearing the name. UAD's "lite" version (1176SE) is good at milder settings, but I think the full 1176LN is every bit as good as the hardware reissue.
I've used two vintage 1176s, but they sounded totally different from one another, so I can't compare the plugin to those (I can't even compare the two units to each other!).
Anyway, just had to defend UA; now back to the original question: you can read about how to order PCBs for a specific 1176LN clone here, and the plans and instructions can be found here. There's a few other variations around the net, but this is the only one I've seen that has specific boards available. I haven't built one of these specifically, so I can't comment on its sound (though I have built an LA2A using a pre-made PCB, which rocked and would still work today if I'd given it proper vents :) ).

Yeah, the old school 1176's tend to vary a bit in sound from unit to unit. There are those ones though that really sound great and there isn't a plugin in the world that can come close to matching that sweetness. Believe it or not the reissues tend to have their own bit of individuality as well, but the variances aren't as extreme as they are with the old ones. I've spent countless hours cutting and mixing nothing but vocals, and there's a HUGE difference in the sound when the Bomb Factory 1176's I use for tracking come off and are replaced by the hardware 1176's for mixing. I actually prefer the Digirack compressor over the BF1176. The Bomb Factory LA-2A is pretty good, though.

Hi
I´ve got one 1176 clone (Gyraf) in a plastic bag somewhere in my studio. Nearly all stuff is finished on the pcb and all stuff should be included. It´s for sale - I already got one and don´t need another one.

Stay Metal!!
