5150 Does Master Of Puppets

I can play this equally well down or alternate picked, although if I'm not playing fast stuff all the time, the downpicking is a lot harder for me.

I like the tone, same feelings as others about the explodey backing track.

I think being able to use both is good...to ONLY downpick like James seems a little bad...poor technique in my opinion. That's not to say that you can't make good music or make it big, but I think it limits your abilities to create certain things in music.

And if it doesn't sound as clean or tight when you alternate pick, it's not because alternate picking prevents it from being tight and clean, its because you're unable to play it clean and tight when you alternate pick. I even have problems with that here and there and you can get it with practice.

I disagree, because no matter how much you practice, alternate picking will always sound different than down picking and here's my reasoning for that:

When down picking, you're hitting the string in the exact same spot, the exact same way each time, sort of the same logic as one guitarist doing all of the rhythm parts to get them as tight as possible. But when alternate picking, your hitting the string two different ways, in two different spots, with two different parts of the pick.

If you can alternate pick it and make it sound right more power to you, but this version you can clearly hear is alternate picked and does not sound like the original. I'd downpick it...

Actually, no, but whatever. This argument has played out before.

But alas, there is no argument for which is a more economic and faster way to deal with things :goggly: :p Something tells me hetfield played this way as he was too crap at the time  I want your clips :heh: We should each do too versions of the song and see what happens.
It makes me think of all these piss poor punk guitarists who can do no more than down pick and you're watching they're poor little weedy arms fall off for they have no brains

Wow.... I mean....wow.... Have you guys ever even heard the original MoP album? Ever seen James play? I seriously doubt that you have... I never thought I'd see the day when people would be so silly as to actually think Hetfield downpicks because he can't alternate pick.

Let's get one thing straight: Hetfield uses alternate picking on many songs.

If people think he's not a great player then I obviously respect that opinion. To say he can't alternate pick is like saying Stevie Wonder can't play the piano when the lights are dimmed.

 When i said that i was 7 beers and a few vodkas down, but still i dunno how could hetfield was technically back then- he's only a rythm guitarist. Of course hetfield's a decent player really responsible for the influence for many :p Even if he was invloved in that st anger shit
