I want to record @home with my 5150, but don't have the cab with me...
So I've seen a lot of posts from people using impulses in their DAW using there amp and its FX send / preamp out.

However, I have this chain:

Guitar -> High gain input -> FX send (OR Preamp Out) -> Interface

I get no signal/sound at all.

I just turned my 5150 on and there's no cab connected.
I played around with the gain, no change.

Does Standby have to be ON, meaning that the LED is ON?

sure does man, dont use the preamp out ! me and my friend used this for a while and the bloody fuse kept blowing
shit actually i hope that aint whats happend to u !
use the fx send !@
the fuse is in the back if u aint getting no sound check it its a simple replacement

but yes the amp has to be complete on man.

Search function ftw!

Yes, the amp must be 100% on! Yes, you WILL fuck your amp up without a speaker load (cabinet or attenuator)!

I did search, thanks ;)
But what wasn't clear was that standby-thingy...

Some heads mean standby when standby is set to off, as with my 5150 which is not logical at all but nonetheless I was basically asking for the cab so thanks for that :)

This has been driving me insane in these past months on this forum - what does "ftw" stand for? And "taking the piss," for that matter?

always thought ppl meant fuck the world ;)

anyway. my triple xxx has to be 100% on for the FX send to work. Which is stupid since the standby is for turning of the poweramp section. my engl savage on the other hand can be on standby and the fx loops will work.

same as my Laney vs the Fireball

ok, now I have my 5150 with cab connected in my room.
I've got one cable from the preamp out to the unbalanced input of my interface.
I don't get any signal. Same with the FX send.
Doesn't matter if I play with Post gain > 0 or not.
Do I need a DI box in between? I mean, my interface has unbalanced inputs...

if you mean standby = sound coming from the cab then yes.
standby (led) is on.
I just figured, once I raise the master volume/post gain to 3-4 I get a usable input signal but it's fucking loud!
can I get a nice signal without pushing the cab and not using a preamp?
I've covered my cab with blankets but it's still so fucking loud...
btw, the fx loop seems to be louder imho.
