5150 + impulses but without cab??

I don't see why someone would build an amp where the master/post gain would affect the signal of the fx send, since the fx loop is just a insert point between the pre & power amp

Well correct me if I'm wrong here, but doesn't the 5150 II only have a channel volume like the original, not a master?

just drove to a friends house, got a preamp, drove back.
plugged it in. guess what. preamp out -> post gain = 0 -> fucking sweet signal...
blah. so, no pre -> crank the cab. end of story
