Some time in the next year i'd hope to get hold of wana these babies, and so i'd like to hear some thoughts and opinions on these 3 favourite forum amps! I know that the Peavey 5150 is a big fan here, and its less than half the price of a mesa! So the question is... whats the biggest bang for the buck? If a 5150 can deliver rectifier like crunch, i'll take the peavey.

I've owned all 3...the Mesa was an older 2 channel version....I preferred my 5150 over the Mesa, but after having that for 4 years I thought it was time for something new....hence the JSX. (plus it's 3 channels) I guess it just boils down to what you like and what sounds better to your ears.

So if you were stuck on a desert island dude....

I own a 5150 signature combo, and a Dual Recto 3 channel. It's hard to pick one man. It really is. OVERALL, when it comes down to the most general of generalizations....the 5150 is more clear or in other words, it's harder to sound muddy with a 5150 than a Recto. I'm going to get flamed for saying that, I know. But when these are the amps that I work with every single day in the studio, and nothing but metal bands come in...the Recto tends to be muddy compared to the 5150. The 5150 is a LEAD PLAYER'S AMP, generally speaking, so it's got more clarity, IMO. I often like layering the two though, because you can get things from one amp that you can't get from the other. The Recto has that Recto sound, which is great. But it's muddy most of the time. So you add the 5150 layered on top of it, and you get the clarity, PLUS the 5150 sound that is great as well. If I absolutely, no if's and's or but's about it, just HAD to pick one, it would be the 5150. But I bought both of them so I wouldn't HAVE to decide, hehe :). The JSX is next on the list for the new studio amp. The last one I bought for the studio was an Engl PowerBall, and it's like the metal god there. Just has such a great metal sound. Which has already been established. But the JSX...it's creamy. I love it. I keep going to the store and playing it. I might end up using it for myself. Anyway, it's hard to say. I would narrow it down to JSX and 5150 though. Good luck.

haven't placed my vote yet...do you mean for studio, live use, or a combination of the two?

i've owned the 5150 and the mesa, used them both live and in the studio...the recto wins for versatility hands down, and it would be my choice for live use...the 5150, however, has THAT tone that i just can't live without and it records so well...so there's a reason why i currently own a 5150, and not a recto

i've really been eyeballing the JSX heads for sometime now, i've demoed them several times and always been impressed...if i were gonna buy another amp of the 3, that would most definitely be the one

EDIT: i just saw that you're over in the UK, in that case there's no way in hell i'd pay the prices mesa amps are going for over there.

just curious, do you have any recordings using these amps that i could check out?

I think if you're going to be using it live, get the JSX and if you're just going to be using it in the studio 5150. And Then get a Mesa in addition and send it over to me. :D

hehe! Some interesting posts here guys, thanks a lot for your opinions. i'd love to get hold of a used 5150. And like cobra said, well... a mesa dual reccy is about £1700 here which is getting on for $2500-3000 :ill: Hhy the hell are they so much more expensive

If i were to manage importing a 5150 from the states (chances of finding one here are impossible, and i dont drive) is there a way i can change the plug easily to work with the UK's 230V?

the 6505+ is the same as the 5150 II, seperate eq's. If you want to buy a 5150 from the states and import it you can buy a voltage converter in your country(little black box) with a switch for 120/240...runs about $100USD...I bought one when I moved to Copenhagen DK.
