WHA???? thomas hakke is amazing. he lacks technique?? he is very consistent and definitely has his own style, more so then the drummer originally described in this thread.

I was originally not bashing this mans (mike) skill as a drummer. The video originally posted did not show off anything spectacular. He could be a really good drummer, but i was judging off the one video. Also, the interview rubbed me the wrong way. He was talkin like a hippie AND I HATE HIPPIES! :loco:

but when it comes down to it, i dont care for individual talents, cause if your in a shitty band, then who cares.
Meshuggah > steve vai
hahah

but seriously...

So my statement about seeing Meshuggah live still stands?

If you have ever seen Meshuggah live you know a lot of their stuff is inaccurate live. I'm not saying they are a bad band. I love em, Its just live there is a quality that is lacking, and that quality is consistency.

I have seen Vai live 4 times, of the 4 times I have seen him live twice it was Virgil Donati on the kit and the other 2 times it was Mike. The shows with Mike were amazing. the ones with Virgil were ok. Im just not a donati fan. The guys is a good drummer but hes all over the place with this fills and always seems like hes just trying to be flashy wish I hate.

Of course this is all personal opinion. But Mangini bashing is a part of the drummer community for some odd reason even though hes a great drummer

I said what I was basing my opinions on, I never said I think the guy is bad.

For the first video, fine. I saw no disclaimer, and if it was about the human body, all's fair, good shit.

But the second one Erkan uploaded didn't change my views much.

I just watched this:

Nothing special other, despite being a snippet.

this was more impressive. This guy has massive chops. But today, I seem to find 12 year old kid nobodies with insane chops. I don't know, maybe I'm too cynical these days.

Actually I'm glad you showed me this vid. He really does kick ass in it. Good shit for sure.

Lmao at his reaction to the snare and cymbals in slow mo. :) That's damn impressive.

Hating on Meshuggah is ridiculous.

Ive never heard Haake miss a stroke at all and Ive seen a shit ton of their shows. The guy commands massive amounts of respect by the entire fucking drum field for a reason.

He doesnt lack a fucking thing.

Ive seen them live twice, and both times he was great but he wasn't playing everything on the album, he missed a lot of accents and had a few flubs on fills and what not. I never said the guy was a bad drummer. I said he lacks the precision Mangini has. Shit he would tell you that himself.

The great thing about Mangini is that he can play with incredible speed AND feel. He is one of the most versatile drummers out there right now. He did come across as a bit pretentious in that video, but hell, if I was that good then I would probably be a bit pretentious too.

Yeah he seems to sort of have that over him, but I think it's not about being pretentious, I think he's just really psyched about playing drums and what he does, that make him look like that. I've had a couple of drinks with him, he seriously was a great guy. Gave me some tips, the guy is really down to earth...

Check out this (starting from 1:20, pure drumgasm!)

Speed is impressive, of course. First few times I'd gawk till my jaw drilled a hole in the floor hearing and seeing drummers rape their kit. I'd say, shit these guys are amazing.

But, even though this is going to sound very contradictory, death metal has made me disregard speed. Seeing where I have to aim at, I go "Shit now that's fucking insanely fast..." but watching youtube videos of practically anyone who's given speed top priority rape the kit with fast rolls and double bass....I just have to say, talent? Talent's in creativity and in the feel. Machine-like limbs is just programming your body to push its limits. Whereas creativity and feel is pushing the boundaries of your mentality with regards to music and the instrument you play.

Please, just type Death Metal Drumming on youtube and see for yourselves, speed has been bastardised because it's all the kids want.

Now, I'd be a total prick if I said that's all Mangini's got, but I didn't like the impression he gave with so much emphasis on speed.

Maybe it's the bleak perception I have of speed. Despite needing to reach higher speeds, I feel that it lost all its charm once I saw that it's a dime a dozen when enough time is spent on it. Whilst seeing someone do something truly unique, now that's what I'm looking for.

And that is why I enjoyed that short snippet in the Time Warp vid. The short clips of him playing where a breath of fresh air from the previous vids. They put a subtle smile on my face, like "Yeah now that's where it's at." Not only were fast chops nicely thrown in, but I loved the groove he had going too. Balance. I like it balanced.
