So, I'm leaving my guitar at the local musicshop tomorrow to install these mics. I haven't decided yet which one to have where, so what's your take on it, what should I try at first?
707 & 81-7

well a lot of people seem to like the 707 in the bridge because it's a bit fatter sounding, but just try it and see man, the quick connect cables are great for this purpose.
I just got a custom Ibanez sent to me a couple weeks ago with the 81-7 bridge/707 neck combo. It is an awesome combination. I was always stubborn about trying EMG's since I used the SD JB but now I'll never go back.
I was in the music store on our past tour in Colorado and tried the Jeff Loomis Schecter Hellraiser. It had the 707 in the bridge and neck. It was a little too dark/bassy for me but I didn't get to mess with the settings too much so it may have been that. Just use the quick connect and try the different combinations.

You'll get better cleans and smooth leads, almost single-coil style from the 81-7 in the neck, but in the bridge the 707 is MUCH heavier. I've a/b'd on the same guitar.
If you're familiar with the tone of an 85 vs. an 81 on a 6-string, it's a very similar tonal difference with 7 strings. The 707 is more like the 85 and sounds a lot better in the bridge.

The 81-7 is in the same kind of housing as the 707.
so hmmm, I guess I'll try it like this then 81-7 neck / 707 bridge.

I'm thinking of making a "phantom power"-box later, but it depends if I'm gonna go wireless or not. hm.

The orientation of the pins on the bottom of the 707 are turned 90 degrees from the way they are on the 81-7 but the same wiring just slides on to either...(Quick Connect).

yeah, the older 6 string emg's were solder ones as well.

The 707's in my Hellraiser are both quick connect, but when I had a VP407 for a bit, the 81-7 in the bridge wasn't quick connect, but the 707 neck was. Weirdest thing ever.

My 81-7 doesn't have quick connect either, it's the same as Kazrog described. Mine is about 2 years old also.
The 707's in my HellRaiser are also QuickConnect, I believe the newer 81-7's are QuickConnect now. Yes, the 707 and 81-7 are both in the same bass pickup housing, they require you to route the guitar out more than you would for a "standard" 7-string pickup. That's the only gripe I would have about putting them in a guitar that has a "standard" pickup, simply because you can't switch back to the other ones just in case, because you'll have a foot of routed guitar showing...not very attractive IMO.
Also, the 707 is basically a mix between the 81 and 85. Everything great about the 81 and the 85 is rolled into one pickup and they added a pole. That's the basic sound of the 707. Now it does have some of it's own flavor in there, but the likeness of the 81+85 is not a bad thing at all. I love the 707's in my HellRaiser, I cut through very well no matter what style I'm playing, very clear, dynamic, tight and crunchy. Good stuff.
