8800 pennies!

Isn't it perfectly legal for someone working at a store or wherever to NOT take what money you give to them though?

That's exactly the point - they get to determine when they do business with you, and if they don't consider your offer to be reasonable you don't get to do much of anything.

Yeah, a store can refuse to accept a shitload of pennies as payment for a new purchase, but the basis of Mr. Pure Beagle Bender's position is that a person cannot refuse payment in offishul cash money for a prior debt then claim the debt still exists. In this case, the cashier's only legal options were to accept the pennies as payment, reject the pennies and waive the debt, or pretend to accept the pennies but then drag her feet counting them until closing time and tell the kid he has to come back tomorrow and start over.:heh:

I wouldn't say it's unreasonable for a place to not accept a fuckload of pennies. I sure as hell wouldn't.

Right, only the Federal Reserve system is strictly required to accept all 'legal tender' - so I don't doubt that this company, as well as most others, already have disclaimers or other legal workarounds declaring that they don't have to accept that many pennies (or, on the other side of the spectrum, extremely large bills that would require large, dollar-sign-marked burlap sacks and the cooperation of several local banks to provide change) and this was just a total waste of time and energy. I love good practical jokes, but this was neither good nor a practical joke - it was less original than the average tape-player, poorly executed, and bordering on harassment.
