Hello,

I am kind of regretting not going for a 1To drive as opposed to my 500go because my day to day use of the laptop is around 450Go, and it made me need to put my libraries (Omnispheres, Superior drummers and co) on a separate drive. I also plan on buying native instrument komplete one of those days to be "done" with synths and be creative again, and it's said to be about 100Go total.

However I was thinking about another possibility : buying a big USB key, about 128 or 256go, to have my libraries at all time with me if I feel like writing music while commuting somewhere else, and not being limited by what VSTi I can use on the fly. I should be free from an iLok since I actually only need it when mixing which is another process on its own, and I can pre-mix with ilok free plugins.

Has anyone ever done that ?

If you have USB3 on your laptop, just buy external USB3 drive (or drive closure with USB3 and put a drive in it), 500G or 1TB, it will be cheaper and probably faster than USB key.

The thing is, they are the same price as an SSD external drive (i don't wanna revert to hard disks), a 250Go would price around 200ish euros for both of them, with an announced speed of about 350mo/s for both of them. The advantage of an SSD is I can get one with thunder port. As I already have an external disk (but a harddisk one, too big for mobility) I could chain them together and not use an USB slot when I am on my desk. However I discovered you can get an USB key for the same price, and it never occurred to me I could use it for various things like a USB normally does, but with such an extra storage capacity.
