I am still waiting for their newest album, which I ordered a while back. While I was waiting, I downloaded about 5 or 6 of their songs on MP3, all decent quality MP3s. My question pertains to the quality of the actual songs on the cd. While the singing is clear on these mp3, and many of the more classical-sounds also sound clean, I find that actual heavy grinding parts to be very muddy. I am not sure if I am really explaining what I am talking about, but it sounds very crackly and distorted, as if the MP3 is having a hard time separating the sound into a more clean grind. Is this just something that is specific to the MP3 files, or is the actual songs very scratchy and artificial sounding when it comes to the heavy riffs? It almost sounds like heavy music played on really bad speakers (which I do not have)

Thanks. I asked this question at this Opeth forum, because this is the forum I first learned about the band.

It might be the MP3 files just having a hard time with all the layers of music.....the small MP3 sample from their site sounds better, even though it is at a lower quality...

The CD has a very small problem with production, it is a bit muddy... I don't think it is as bad on the CD as you are hearing on the mp3 though. My biggest problem with the production is that the orchestration is kind of hard to hear at some points but other than tat it dosnt deduct from the overall quality of the cd.

Well, the production of the album is very good, a heavy production as it should be.

About the MP3
If it isn´t recorded at the highest quality than you loose much of the music,......but it´s only to hear samples so you don´t have to worry because the new album is even better than the first.

Cheers

What does this band sound like, somebody recommended them to me and provided me a direct link to mp3s, but neglected to provide a description, and I never sample music withour prior knowledge of the band from reviews, message board tetsimony, etc.

Hey Demonspell, check out a thread I started about a week or so ago, dedicated to the band, I give a little description of their sound, I think it should help.... If not let us know and those of us who have heard them will inform you. But I can best describe it as Very Symphonic melodic death metal....

Hollenthon are absolutely fantastic. They're sample based rather than riff based, IE, their songs are expertly constructed around a collection of samples, rather than the normal method of adding them later ad-hoc.

This could mean that in the same song you get Gregorian choirs, Maori Haka's, Irish Jigs and more all blended together. And it works, mainly because it's been fused together with the intellegence of Einstein and the patience of a saint.

I can't recommend the band higher.
