It can really come down to personal preference, but there are a lot of monitors out there that will be recommended to you. I'm really satisfied with my KRK Rokit 5s right now. They're my first pair of monitors, and I'm not a veteran engineer by any means, but for the price they're great. I've heard some really nice Yamaha's too. I would suggest going down to your local music store and testing out as many monitors as you can, see if you can even rent a pair or two to really test them out and see which you prefer.
