Alarm and surveillance setups for studio

Pricing stuff out. My place is in the ghetto- like full-clip gunshots a block away ghetto. I have window cages and an outer cage and deadbolts on every door but I'd like more lockdown. Right now the cameras I have use outdated connectors and the alarm system is outdated and tied to a company with shitty monthly rates and upgrade-installation fees.

I've done a little research. But I'm not sure what I can get for cheap and do myself. Two windows in the front, front door and metal door in the back with a 5/8 bolt and lock. So far what I've seen is iCam and SimpliSafe might be my best bet.

I'd like cellphone coverage and online streaming if possible. I have about 1000 USD to spend but I would obviously like to spend less (so I can buy the fun stuff). I'm trying to keep a monthly service under 40 a month. Kind of a wacky question since some of that stuff totally depends on the area/provider. Figured I'd ask the forum.

What are you guys using for your homes/studios and what is it running you?

For 50$ you can get an Arduino board and step motor, some wires and magnetic sensors. Then you code it to trigger the step motor when the sensor opens.
It could trigger anything... like a gun trigger.. That would be like an hardcore version of the movie Home Alone.
(I'm kidding of course)
But you could trigger an alarm, a big honk, lights, etc.. (no need for the motor, just the Arduino). You can buy additional modules for cheap that could possibly call you to let you know or txt you. Any IT student would code it for you for cheap and you can do it yourself if you google a little.
