Like for the greatest death metal album ever
It didn't quite make the cut for my 1991 list but it's a great death metal release. I've heard a lot of people trash this band for being kind of standard prior to being on this forum but their work has held up far better than much of what Cannibal Corpse has released.

The first 2 MC releases are just as good as anything released by Obituary, Deicide, etc.

That's like saying Anthrax held up well against Xentrix and Slammer.

idk I listen to Anthrax more than I do Xentrix. I can't remember the last time I thought to myself 'Man, I'm really in the mood for some shitty second rate British Metallica clone'

Unless I'm just tired and that's the point you were trying to make.

The spoken word passages set up some amazing songs on this album:
I have come into possession of a certain ancient book, a collection of arcane scrawlings reputed to have been derived from an even earlier transcription, allegedly lost during the great fire of 1666. The Chthonic Chronicles!

Glyphs, sigils, occult pictograms, six score and ten oblations to some malign entity of colossal evil… some diabolical avatar of the Z’xulth. Khthon! I must delve further into the foreboding depths of this great black book…

He was saying that it's easy to be better than bands that aren't that great.

You'd have to ask HBB why he thinks so. I don't have a strong opinion on the band one way or the other.

I was more replying to Talos regarding CC but beyond the first two albums Obituary is pretty crap anyways.

Florida's death metal bands generally got old and/or bad quickly.

The End Complete was such a disappointment. Total retread of the previous only with simpler songwriting. Basically their Arise. I prefer the groove metal shitpile of World Demise to it.
