read the last neige intervew in their myspace... no black metal at all in the new amesoeurs, more like post punk

people into shoegaze will think that this alcest is very good. The others expecting a black metal album will be very disapointed

^ I happen to love both, and I find it satisfies both needs well.

Anyone who loves Ride that happens to love Black Metal will be deeply satisfied with this album. And quite frankly, shoegazing is a damned fine genre of music. There are beautiful shapes of sound within the gentler kind of power it has.

Nah, this is just absolutely amazing - I won't say 10/10 because it isn't for me yet, but easily high 9.x/10

+1 mate.

Edit: anyone got the previous releases? Its going to be agonising waiting for the new album's release date in the meantime. I want my (real) copy NOW!

I don't know why anyone would be expecting a black metal album. It was pretty apparent long ago when Neige uploaded samples from the album that the black metal sound had pretty much been entirely eliminated.

Anyways, I am only on the second track now so I'll post my real first impressions once I have listened to it all.

the two myspaces track were great.... but the other tracks on the album are just more of the same... not so impressive.

Alcest has signed for like 4 or 5 albums on his new label, i hope he progress more than just burzum guitar + shoegaze vocal.

and the last track is a big what the fuck?

anyway I wonder how many people would think this so incredible if they hadn't been playing black metal before.

I haven't even listened to the entire album once yet but I can already safely say that the tracks each have their own identity. Of course the overall sound is similar (it's called consistency).

GREAT POST. Total truth.

Also, the last track is one of the best. Fuckers.

Shoegazing is a fucking cool style, I've loved it since the early 90s myself, so I'd still dig the album anyway

Yeah I agree the last track is very good, definitely one of the album's highlights. The only thing different with it is the lack of a tremelo picked electric guitar.

Also, if you have read any interviews with Neige you would know he is a big fan of Yann Tiersen's "Rue Des Cascades" and to me, this last track seems to be him trying to replicate that sort of sound in his own Neige-styled way.

I just finished one full listen through and here are some of my initial thoughts. The sound is definitely heavily inspired by shoegaze but seems to be more 'refined' due to the frequent use of acoustic guitars towards the crescendos of the songs. I also detect traces of the whole "post" sound through the heavy use of layering, especially as the songs climax. I remember reading in an interview with Neige about Alcest and he stated his goal was to conjure extreme nostalgia with this project. I think he has largely succeeded here. The cover art even seems to recall the innocent bliss of a carefree childhood in the dawn of a new Spring season.

Moreover, the album is extremely consistent with its sound. Each track feeds into the next near perfectly allowing the mood of the songs to be fully enjoyed with little obstruction. In other words, the flow of the album is pretty much spot on. Considering how strong the consistency of the album is, one would assume that a necessary lack of distinctness between the tracks would follow. This is not so. In fact, even though Neige makes use of the same 'bag of tracks' (i.e. picked acoustic guitars, tremelo picked electric guitars, dense layers of sound, relaxing, almost spacey vocals) he is able to twist and turn these ingredients, mainly through varying approaches to song structure, so that each song has its own identity while still appealing to the overall motifs of the album more generally.

I definitely need to listen to this more, but my first impressions are very good.

All those reviews are jumping the gun. The album has only been leaked for what 3 days? To truly judge an album's worthiness I think that a decent amount of time (not just continuous spins) must be given, if only to uncover hidden any gems and to determine the longevity of the piece.
