Am I Doing This Right?

After hearing some of the awesome results you guys got w/ impulses I'm trying them out. I've got everything working software-wise...

Am I supposed to run my 5150s FX Send into my soundcard's input? When I do that I get almost no sound.

Thanks for the help.

...that being said, yes that's right, though the post gain of the channel you're on affects the amount of signal coming out. Apparently by inserting an instrument cable into the FX return without the other end plugged into anything makes the sound coming out of the speakers softer, so you can get a good signal into your soundcard without the thing being too loud. Because you should always have a cab plugged in.

Dang about the post gain. I was hoping for a silent recording solution. Is there anyway to bring up the signal without using the post gain? Like a preamp or DI box or something?

Thanks for replying... even under the assumption that I didn't search.

The sooner you, and everyone else that is afraid of wires for some reason, learn that electronics aren't complicated, the better. Especially talking about a dummy load...it's a few resitors wired together and a 1/4" jack - wow, sounds sooooo complicated.

You could also run a dummy load so you don't have to use your speakers. I think this would be good for those that use acutal amps and impulses for doing demo work etc...
Here's an article I just found that kind of explains how to make a dummy load for your amp.

Have any of you actually tried this? I might build one of those just to have around but I it seems too simple and easy to be real.

Okay, 006's post didn't sink in, so...

Electronics don't hate you. They make sense. There are simple, elegant solutions to many problems and if the math behind something works out it's going to be all right. The universe does inherently make sense, and the amp gnomes aren't going to murder you and fry your t00bz just because it makes sense and looks simple.

A couple of Wikipedia reads and you can see exactly how this stuff all works. I'll eventually finish this impedance monstrosity, but until then just get a book or read the Wikipedia stuff. See what a load accomplishes and how one goes about making one... it's not that hard.

Unless you feel like coming down to Texas (the food's worth it) or paying my way up there (I'm broke) all I can say is practice. Touch wires, melt a glob of solder onto the wires, hold them still until the solder cools, and you have a connection.

:waah: Jesus dude, now you made me cry... I'm gonna go tell my mommy. :waah:

Fer serious man, you don't know the amp gnomes we have around my crib. We gots gnomes in diapers pimpin 40's and Glocks upside my block

You gonna buy me a new Mesa 2:Ninety when I blow mine up? How about if I don't blow it up? Will you buy me another one anyway?

It was worth a shot.

All my joints are always big ugly unclean globs haha, I can never get a really clean solid looking solder joint... Maybe I need to invest in a new soldering iron instead of the 25 year old one my dad has sitting around in the garage

If you're reeeeeeeeeeeeally afraid of soldering and electronics and don't mind substituting money for work, I'd recommend a THD Hot Plate. I just bought Kazrog's a little while ago, and I'm getting fantastic results with my 5150... I use the line out on the Hot Plate with the switch set to "Load", so I don't need a cab connected, and I get to record the poweramp in addition to the preamp. I make impulses using a flat poweramp (or even a headphone amp if I'm feeling naughty), and in a mix, I'm getting as good results as I ever did playing loud and putting mics on the cab. As a bonus, the Hot Plate is a nice attenuator, and I can use the cab for bedroom jamming if I want and not disturb roommates who live in the rooms next to and above me... but direct + impulses sounds so good I rarely do this.

Sounds like you are soldering to cold to me. Get a soldering iron that you can set the temp. Then you will be set.

First I'd try holding the joints together better while it cools - sounds to me like you're moving a little bit and it's screwing up the joint. If it doesn't start and stay shiny, you're probably just not holding it together right... 15-30 watts should be enough for this stuff, anything above 50 runs the risk of frying sensitive things.

These are probably actually safer than just a homemade dummy load as well. I just read something about how they emulate how actual speakers react to an amplifier and it's more beneficial to the health of the amp or whatever.

Also, something about how the tone of the amp changes when it's attenuated (of course), and they have an adjustable tone control to kind of make up for that.

Sounds like a good reason to pay a little extra.

Well, what happens is that the impedance is not constant across the whole frequency spectrum... I posted (a LONG while back, don't remember where) a more accurate load that would match a real cab more closely, I need to find that bastard again...

OMG The exact thread I was looking for. :)

Ok, so I have a dummy load. Should I just plug it in to the Line-in?
If so, I know how to use impulses with audio. Record a part and have Kefir as a insert, play.
But how do I use impulses when I'm just jamming in real time?

I own a creative X-fi card, perhaps not the greatest for studio purposes but didn't know so much about good soundcards then.

Reason why is because I'm not in a band at the moment and I'm pretty tired of the pod.
I was thinking a Engl head but since I can only afford a amp and not a cab aswell (and I don't really need to play loud either), I could just plug it in to computer and use a impulse so I can jam and record silently.
