I've recently hatched plans to come and live in the states from about June next year. I intend to start in Minnesota, purchase a motorcycle, and ride south following the Mississippi, taking photos along the way. Spend maybe 3-4 weeks on the road, and then make base in New Orleans. Anyone know how easy it is to get work there?

Wanna spend 6 months in the south and then travel around a bit. Any suggestions on places to go, people to see, etc.?

As a Canuckian I can offer you no direct advice save to say the idea of a Motorcycle based trip will always have my full support. If you swing by north easternish at some point let us Canuckian fucks know.

My best advice is that that's a really ugly section of the country with a really struggling economy where it will be hard to find good work. You should start in the west. Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, etc. It's beautiful, the weather is great, and your bound to have an easier time finding a job.

With respect to work, it depends on what you do for a living. I'd use some of the online job search engines, like Monster.com, and get a sense of how much work there is for you in New Orleans. If I was looking to relocate to another state other than my own, I'd be looking at Oregon or California.

I am a graphic designer/journalist/photographer/web admin/multimedia producer. I have an extremely strong CV at this point, and feel quite confident in finding work wherever I go. Who knows, I might be in for a rude awakening, but I intend to find out for myself.

Cost of living over there is about half of what it is here, so it seems like a good step. I'd like to meet with most of you, and Max, NY is definitely on the list, as well as Canada - though probably on the way out, late next year.

I want to spend a good 6 months working there, so yeah, a working visa (greencard, whatever you call it) is my hope. Otherwise I'll just spend a month and a half travelling around from coast to coast. One way or another, I intend to be in the states from June next year.

The type of work you do Nico is great as you really don't have to be tied down to a place. If you are resourceful enough you can pick up work and deliver it from anywhere on the road from a laptop.
there is usually tons of freelance work around.

I like to set myself up a bit - meet clients face to face, get to know them and get a proper feel for what they want and need. Freelancing without feeling is well and good but does not make for the strongest body of work. And I'm fucking horribly lousy at selling myself. I'd prefer to work for - or with - somebody who is more business minded than myself.

Minnesota is fantastic if you're an outdoorsman. If you get a chance, I would recommend hitting the Boundary Waters area on the border of Canada.

I would recommend doing an E > W or vice versa kind of trip as well. You will experience a lot of changes in "everything" this way much more so than traveling N > S in Middle America.

You read me like a book. Sure, Alligators are much more docile, smaller and yield less valuable leather, but they seem like a good laugh.
