Good choice, but I'd also suggest Imaginations from the Other Side. That tends to be the fan favorite.

I prefer to recommend things I currently own...but that's the next one on my list to get. ;)

Oh yeah, I haven't evangelised about Ark recently:

Ark - Burn the Sun

flawless.

Check out Andromeda's Extension of the Wish, or Final Extension or whatever the rerecorded version is called. Their follow up wasn't as strong in my opinion.

and I shall also mention Orphaned Land because they are so unbelievably good, despite being not particularly similar in style to Symphony X. As Matt pointed out, they do have a middle eastern influence, as well as some degree of death vocals (I regard them as tasteful, where I despise most (all) other death vocals). Well on their older albums, they mostly have death vocals, but Mabool only has some. Mabool is a masterpiece. It is like stupidly good, and the only way you will understand this is by buying it. Take a chance on it. If you regret it, you need your eyes examined because you probably bought the wrong album.

Adagio are a similar style and sound, perhaps a bit too similar.

The new Kamelot CD is very good, very symphonic. It seems like you're looking for more of a symphonic power metal style. There are quite a few, like others mentioned, but none quite like Symphony X. They are one of a kind in the prog metal genre. Did you get V yet?
Welcome to the forum!

thank you :D

Yeah I have V. it's awesome but I probably prefer DWoT + TiO. still need to buy The Odyssey though.

I have epica and that is very good..i definately need to pick up the new one because a lot of people have said it's great :) Yeah I have always liked a symphonic feel to my music. does anybody here listen to Dimmu Borgir's Stormblast + For All Tid albums? Very beautiful and powerful but im not as keen on the direction they went in after those.

I hate black metal =\

Anyway, Adagio is your best bet, by far. When Adagio released their first album, people thought it was like a Symphony X-clone. No, I'm not saying they copy, it was completely different, but they had the same style and feeling, meaning it kicks ass.

For next closest... Hmm...

Andromeda is a huge prog blast, very electronic, not as much metal as SyX but still pretty damn kick ass. If you're going to get one, get Extension of the Wish (II=I is crap)

Shadow Gallery is one of my favorite bands. They're not nearly as heavy as Symphony X. Their style is closer to Dream Theater I would say (I prefer these guys over DT though). I've got all their albums and would definitely recommend Tyranny.

Angra is the best power metal band, bar-none. I love Angra and have all their albums (excluding EPs and 1 live album). The closest Symphony X sound Angra has is with their newest one, Temple of Shadows, so there's my recommendation. (The song Temple of Hate sounds very Symphony X like)

Threshold I'd also like to recommend. They don't seem very popular on these boards, but shit, one listen to Subsurface and I fell in love. I can't describe how perfectly these musicians come together on this cd. Any of their cds with singer Mac is great. Mac is my favorite singer of all time. Threshold has a somewhat Symphony X feel. Not as much as Adagio's Sanctus Ignis, but damn does this cd kick ass.

I would not recommend Pain of Salvation as others have suggested. Their style is way too off from Symphony X and I pretty much don't like them very much. I listened to Be all the way through as well, and I can only say, you have to listen to that for the atmosphere and story, not the music.

Oh yeah, I agree. "Extension of the Wish" is excellent. I like it too, but it tends to put me in a frantic manic mood. Not recommended when driving in heavy traffic.
ROAD RAGE!!!! :headbang:
"Judge, I admit. I was under the influence of Andromeda"
HUH? o_O

Gee, I can't figure out how to post here without making this post look like a razzle-dazzle pastiche of the other guys' posts..

here are some recommends:

--Ark(I love the title track! and "Just a Little")
--Royal Hunt
--Dreamscape
--Kamelot(The Black Halo is a must-have! Im in the process of getting this for myself)
--Threshold(the vibe is there, to hell with the fact that they may not be as technical
as any other group I've mentioned here)
--Adagio
--Angra(new album is also highly recommended)
