I'm looking to experiment with some new tones but I've yet to find any impulse that suits my ear so I want to ask is it possible to use an amp sim then take a line out into the FX return of my 6505 and record with a microphone.

Would I need any kind of reamp box to do this?

Thanks!

You'll have to check the specs on the amp, I can't remember if the loop on the 5150 is line level or guitar level.

But yeah you have it right, just go from your interface output, to level/impedance matcher if needed, and into the fx return.

Some amps loops are geared for guitar pedals, so they make them -10db. I think the 5150 is one of them.

Used to do this with my POD XT and Marshall DSL (which handily enough had a loop that can switch between -10 and +4)

Great way to get a good range of tones and still have the real-ness of a valve poweramp and a decent cab. Just make sure to switch off the cab modelling on your amp sim so you're just using it as a preamp modeller.
