Amorphis

The two first are great death metal classics, but being the sucker for catchy rock I am, I also love their later material.

Tales.. is definitely my favorite by them, probably mostly because it's their first album I bought.

And yeah, Greed has great vocals, I think it's actually Pasi Koskinen doing them instead of Tomi Koivusaari who handled all the other harsh vox.

That may be, I don't remember anything about line-up changes, it's been years since I've listened to Amorphis. If there are any more death-ish tracks like that post-Tuonela I'd listen to em though.

I would even say that The Karelian Isthmus is the best Finnish death metal CD ever (and the best Finnish metal CD ever, for that matter), topping both Demigod - The Slumber of Sullen Eyes and Demilich - Nesphite. Those two CDs are still great though, it's just that The Karelian Isthmus is easily one of the best three death metal CDs ever released (and those two are in the top five).

I agree on isthmus.

Actually i've come to the conlusion Demigod 'slumber of the sullen eyes' is the best death metal album ever. Not just in Finland but the world. It's a shame they did not follow it up properly. Adramelech 'pyschostasia' sounds more like a follow up to slumber of the sullen eyes than Demigod 'shadow mechanics'.

also...Funebre 'children of the scorn' would make my top 5 finland death metal albums.

Tuonela and Elegy are probably their best - to me, the albums before that were generic death metal and albums after generic rock. But those two were unique, the dynamic songwriting, the instruments used brought them to the peak of Amorphis' career.

Elegy and Tales are my favorite albums from Amorphis. Elegy is one of the few albums I have that even to this day, still gets some CD play and never got old.

I would say start from Privilege of Evil, and work your way up. If you can adjust you might be able to enjoy the whole catalog. I found it hard to accept the new stuff after Elegy. Elegy was such a huge change..but I enjoyed that one.

Greys has Dark Recollections in his sig.

I've know about Entombed,Dismember for awile not knowing about Carnage till recently. awsome album

The Karelian Isthmus, while not being a groundbreaking death metal album, was well played and the songs probably have no equal among mid-paced DM except for songs by Obituary.
Tales From 1000 Lakes WAS groundbreaking DM, but I did not care for what's-his-names's clean vox. Too nasaly.
Elegy was a great metal/prog-metal album, and everything after that I don't care much for.
My favortie would have to be Karelian, I've listened to that album on a regular basis (literally) for about 5 years now.
