Would it be ok to only use an amp head without the cabinet for practice? because I don't play many live things.

That's not possible. You'll need to get a combo or a smaller cab.

the amp head itself produces NO sound as it has no build in speakers. you could even damage the head running it without a cabinet

as Endothermic said: you're probably searching for a combo or a head with a smaller cabinet (like 2*12 or 1*12)
