An Ayreon Thread

it seems to me a lot of people are insisting that Ayreon is good simply because Mikael guest appeared on the human equation. No offense to Mikael, but thats a guitar in his hands, not a magic wand...not even he could save Ayreon from disgrace...(especially since he only did vocals). ;)

Mikael is on Voices, Love, Trauma and Confrontation from what i remember. This IS a 'rock opera' album, so don't expect Mike to be doing everything on those songs. He has a part, which he sings well, but its mostly quite limited.

And as i always say, start with Into The Electric Castle before THE...THE can seem pretty dull the first couple of listens. ITEC is just an amazing music adventure through sci-fi fantasy, full of bombast and an utter lack of seriousness. Ahhh, so enjoyable...

ps. Chaos does indeed kick ass. Though Journey On The Waves Of Time is really the only other song i love on that cd. I prefer The Dream Sequencer, with classics like My House On Mars, Dragon On The Sea, Temple Of The Cat and And The Druids Turn To Stone. Shit, i need to listen to that now....

how did this become a discussion on black metal? :err:

Ayreon is very cool, but i don't think Human Equation is the best... my favorite would be the sideproject Star One. it seemed to flow better and had less cheesy lyrics. Human Equation by far had the best guests though.

well for my opinion on Ayreon, i really like The Human equation, some fantastic songs, Uinversal Migrator etc....have a few good songs, otherwise some real dull ones, imo the female vocalists come through with the outstanding performances on Ayreon projects...

edit: Into The Electric castle is a really good album too, right up there with THE :headbang:

Have you even listened to the album? Or just judged it entirely on its storyline, which was meant to be a joke more than anything else?

If his storylines are meant to be a joke, theyre not even funny. His lyrics suck ass:

[hippie (chorus:)]
hey dude, you're so uncool
but hey, that's allright
like there's no need to get uptight
my eyes reflect the stars
and a smile lights up my face
we're on an amazing flight in space

Thats worthy of an execution. Anyone that commits that type of twaddle to paper should be taken outside and shot in the back of the head.

And yes, Ive listened to it. The music takes all the best aspects of dream theater and general power metal, and it throws it right out the window. Ironic then that its called "progressive".

Actually, those lyrics make me smile/laugh. It fits the album so perfectly, even if it may not be masterpiece literature. To each their own i suppose...

Heh, and its ironic that you use DT as your example, as many here consider them crap (at least as far as Prog goes), something that SHOULD be thrown out the window. Besides, i don't even see the connection with DT, and only veeery loosely with power metal.

Seeing as I cant stand DT or Power Metal, my "best of" comment cant be taken that literaly. But hey, you honestly didnt know how I thought about those things so thats alright :)

Anyway, I thought the music was really lame, the lyrics to be vapid, and the singing for many of the tracks to be sub par on a lot of his work. Though im a huge fan of Anneke van Giersbergen, I love her voice and i love The Gathering.

Ayreon is pretty cool. I have to agree with the lame themes/lyrics though, I love science fiction and all but Ayreon is the type you'd see being ridiculed on MST3K. Sometimes the music reminds me of guys in tye-dye t-shirts dancing, but whatever.

i think Arjen is pretty fucking ambitious. i agree with the cheesiness though. however, please show me some music that isn't, in some way, cheesy. i think it all is.

I downloaded some of it, its really not what i was expecting. The folky stuff is kinda cool, but the few metal riffs I heard were rather St Anger ish. I dont think ill be shelling out for this album, ill download the rest of it though.
