Tape impulses are kinda pointless. The "tape sound" is a non-linear process. Something you can't capture in an IR. You could probably achieve the same result with EQ.

Try the Voxengo Analogue suite. The Tapebus is different Tape IR's with saturation to mimic the real thing.

These are the "beamsonic" impulses that I already have. Something isn't quite right with them to my ear. They sound like my first four track in a bad way. Maybe I am doing something wrong?

Show you what? Tape compresses and saturates differently depending on signal levels and frequency. This kind of effect cannot be captured by a linear sampling method therefore all you're really getting is a static frequency rolloff.
You'd be better off with something like PSP Vintage Warmer.
He doesn't mean you can achieve a tape effect, he means you can achieve the same effect a tape machine IR will get you,
Since a tape machine will vary its compression and distortion with what signal is put into it, it can't be simulated with an impulse so easily, it takes something with more variables.
If you do an IR of a tape machine you might as well do a slow sloping low pass filter pretty high up I'd imagine

Even Voxengo CurveEQ comes with a few presets designed to emulate the EQ curve and saturation of tape. I'm still flying the flag for Vintage Warmer though.
