Ditto. That kick drum sound also inspired a lot of bad kick sounds on other bands' albums for years. Of course, I pretty much hate Metallica and Slayer in general anyway.

i remember hearing he somehow placed coins on the kickpads, to make a strong click sound

the actual production of the album marks an important development in the recorded history of metal for its clean and crisp atmosphere. Ulrich's kick drums don't "thud" so much as "click" (by boosting the higher frequencies and/or by using a coin (e.g., a New Zealand 50 cent coin taped to the bass drum for when the beater head hits, providing the "Metallica click;" this will provide the sound but damage the drum skin quickly),

and also this is Newsted's first album with the band. James and Lars asked to have the bass track intentionally turned down...thats another reason why the mix sounds kind of funky

Uggghhh, I think the guitar tone is terrible! Not only is it the scooped anemia that I'm so used to from the band, but it "woofs" in the low mids like CA-RAZY; I honestly can't think of an album I've ever heard that has been in greater need of a little "Andy's C4 settings" treatment (except, you know, without computers). I do like the kick, though; it's just hard to notice with that awful snare!

As it happens, I'm currently taking a break from reviewing 2 Metallica songs for a gig next week with my cover band ... "Helpless" and "Blackened". The setlist we wworked out puts these 2 songs back to back and without intentionally straying too far from the original question posed I would like to throw my opinion in on what Remy had said. Even though AJFA was the 1st full album with Newsted, lets not forget the Garage Days EP. Newsted's bass was pretty noticeable on that ep and even though it was supposed to capture a more raw "garage band" feel, I have to say the actual sound of that ep is awesome ... mostly because there IS such a large amount of his bass in the mix. He's actually a great bass player so I can't see why they would have his bass tracks turned down on AJFA just because it was his 1st full album with them. They had already done the ep to introduce him to the fans and show that he was a good player. I think any mix decisions for Justice were primarily made for selfish reasons. Its true that it was a newer sound for album productions, and in a way the cold & sterile sound actually emphasized the dark tone of the songs but I still think it was a boo boo to not have that bass in there. However, opinions and assholes wa?

Anyway, the kick drum .... sounded lke ass on small speakers but was actually really cool when listened to through a big system. Don't know if the "coin trick" was done or not because I've heard that same story for just about every kick drum sound that came out for a year before to about 3 years later. Would be cool if someone did email Mr. Rasmussen and maybe post what he says because I'm curious what his exact answer would be.

Cheers!

That was cool. Nothing said about the coin on the kick though.

They never used coins. The coin is a "poor mans trick" to achieve something similar. It's all about mic placements and eq. (And yes, it helps if the actual drum sounds good)

To metallicalize a good kick sample; boost at 5-6k or higher, cut at 500 or lower, compress it a bit with 10-20 ms attack. Welcome to click-heaven.

damn, just listened agai to it (first time in year)...I always forget how much Lars sucks at the drums ;)

the snare sounds like the bottom-mic was compressed heavily with the wrong settings....
man.....
I remembered this being a kickass recording....I was so wrong!

still like the songs though
