Do you mean compressing drums and bass while recording ? If so, I'd say don't do it, there's no point really in doing that. Applying compressor during the mix is cool enough and you're not f**ed if you compressed too much. Depending on the singer, I might use a bit of compressor while recording vocals, and then compress it as well during the mix.

Thanks a lot for the opinions PE... hey, aren´t you the bass player of Heavenly? i was in Paris in 2001, and had the chance to attend to the record release party of the "Sign of the winner" album, with "Mandrake" opening... let me tell you, i had a blast that night... i am yet to hear ¨Dust to Dust" i am a big fan of Fred´s guitar playing.
