As long as you buy a proper German built one not a mexican or South African (when they made them there) you should be fine. My folks have a 97 Golf which has never had a single thing wrong with it. Also how many really old hondas do you see running around these days? yet how many old Vw's are still powering around huh?

one would assume that factories in different countries owned by the same company would comply to the same tolerances. so do factories in south africa and mexico just have monkeys running them? actually, they are run by german engineers.
fact is, VW is notorious for being unreliable. doesnt matter about personal experience, statistics show a completely different story.
their cars are attractive and safe though, so...................there you have it.

^haha did you know germans are among the worlds leaders in lost productivity? it's in a recent "foreign policy". id quote it but id have to get out of this chair and find it.

just thought it was funny and i guess the relevance is: we were talking about the productivity of "lesser" nations like mexico and south africa. using the same logic it'd be easy to assume that german-made products are actually WORSE in quality [/stabinthedark]

my parents' beemer (2002 325i) was built in south africa, no serious problems afaik...or were you referring to VWs?

Are you sure?

Because the 3-series was always built in Frankfurt (or maybe Munich, I forget which). I say "was always" because my 2001 325xi was built in Germany. I should know, since I waited 8 weeks while it was assembled from scratch based on my custom order.

Don't know if that changed in 2002, but I can't imagine BMW would all of a sudden decide to take their benchmark car and NOT build it in Germany.

I really want to race some idiot in a beemer, most of them a pompus pricks not saying you are gugs your just a wanker (kidding). I love blowing off people in my old 79 Golf its so unsuspecting. Im going to save up for some more mods so i can take all the skyline drivers in town :loco:

all Beemers are still made in Germany ... Mini's are made in Oxford, England under BMW's watchful eye ... as you can imagine when I bought the Mini I was real anxious about what gremlins will appear, knowing this is a British built car, but knock on wood, besides some normal crap going wrong here and there it has never let me down in 2.5 years.

for ther record, BMWs are made in south carolina. id like to hear some more wierd logic about build quality with this fact in mind.

not all BMWs.

The X-series (SUVs) and the Z3/Z4 roadsters are made in South Carolina. All 3, 5, 6 & 7-series are made in Germany.
