another Dio thread..

Blitzkrieg

Master Exploder
Been listenin to a bit of Dio today, and am listening to 'Angry Machines' at the moment. I know its a pretty crap album, and probably Ronnie's worst, but my god it has some cool shit on it, and I never realised how cool the guitar sound on this album is. A bit like VXI, crappy album overall, but lots of good ideas and shit in there if you look. :)

Yes.

I've actually been delving back into some Rainbow this week - the first album, Long Live Rock And Roll and Rising.
How many great songs did Ronnie and Ritchie write together?!

Man On The Silver Mountain
Long Live Rock And Roll
Kill The King
Gates Of Babylon
Tarot Woman
Stargazer

...just to start a list...

Ronnie's vocals on Gates Of Babylon are still just awesome.

"He's the King of Rock And Roll!!!!"

I like Institutional Man.
Hunter Of The Hear and Double Monday work well live too.

Joe, funny that, as I pulled out the rainbow albums this week as well. Ritchie and Ronnie were fuckin awesome together. And Gates of Babylon does indeed rocketh. I love the middle solo section. It is so majestic! Stargazer also has that epic motherfuckerness about it. And I love the solo in A Light in the Black.
I had Rainbow ON STAGE playing in the car today. It rules. The live versions of Kill the King, Catch the Rainbow, and Man on the silver mountain are classic, as well as Mistreated which sounds just as good with Ronnie singing as it did with David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes

Glenn Hughes is an amazing singer and a shit hot bass player... I got the Sabbath story DVD number 2 last week. Glenn looks funny with a beard.
What is your fave GH solo album Spifferino?
I really love the heaviness of Addiction, but the follow up, The Way It Is is a fuckin great album. Every song is awesome.

To be honest I've had trouble finding his solo albums - the only ones I have are "Burning Japan Live" and "Return Of Crystal Karma", both of which rock. I saw "Hughes Thrall" a couple of weeks ago but didn't have any money to buy it. :(

Well I have virtually all of his solo albums. I know, I am a hard-ass, but you get used to it. I love Addiction because it is hard as shit. Probably the hardest stuff he has ever recorded. It came out just after he cleaned himself up in the mid 90's.

Tell ya what Spiff, if ya want, I will say to you that I will make you a couple of copies of Glenn Hughes albums onto CD for ya, but will probably be to freakin lazy to ever get around to it.
How does that sound?

Glenn Hughes has one of the best rock n' roll voices ever. I don't know why Deep Purple bothered hiring David Coverdale as well, but there you go :). That said, some of the harmonies they do together are brilliant. "You Keep on Moving" is one of my fave DP songs for just that reason.

Still haven't heard any Rainbow. Must check out Rising and Long Live Rock n Roll sometime soon.

I just bought a Dio tape (Killing The Dragon????). It's ok, but the music is pretty plodding. Is his other stuff better than that?
