yup...here's another little mic-shootout.

I used 4 mics this time, two of them I'm still experimenting with, so I don't wanna tell you what they are right now (you'll probably be able to tell from the name anyways, but if that's the case please keep it for yourself).

I clearly have two favorites in these clips (57 and quartermile), combined (2 tracks each)these are hard to beat.
I really love the m201 as a blend-in mic, fucking awesome in combination with a 57 (I can understand why M. Lewis is digging it).
the 1933 I don't like at all by itself, it's cool if blended with another mic though, opens the sound up and gives it more dimension...on its own in this position...not so much.
I tried to keep the position as similar as possible for this shootout.

sm57
m201
quartermile
1933

what do you think?

Quartermile is great. It's the only one not so "acid" like the 57. Great for blending but also great by itself.
Anyway....what's Quartermile? I didn't find anything about them

I like the 57 one best. Recently used a beyer m201 on a cab for a project, blended it with a 57. Don't like it much on it's own but it adds some nice heft when blended.

57 and quartermile blended to taste would be my choice. If I had to pick one mic only it would be the 57, the 57 clip has attitude. The quartermile is nice also, smoother sound.

The SM57 pwns all the others.

well, the quartermile is EXTREMELY versatile, I could as well have gone for a sound closer to the 57, I'm just into thick and juicy tones atm.

but yeah, the Heil really is a let down for me (I know, Andy and Barresi etc are digging it).
haven't tried it on snare yet, probably pretty cool.
I think it's a versatil mic, I just think it's too fizzy for distorted guitars (and despite the Heil description I know few mics that sound less like a ribbon than this one).

well, perhaps I'll just have to play around with the position a bit more

Interesting thread…

A few listenings through my MP3 ear buds… Here is how I “hear” your clips (for what it’s worth): :D

#1 SM57 – lotsa presence, lively sound
#2 Quarter Mile – close match to the SM57
#3 M201 – duller then the above mics
#4 1933 – sounds to bright

What amp did you use for the test? Thanks for sharing those clips and taking the time for this.

nope, the quartermile is no sm7.

but you'll be able to derive the mic from the name perhaps...

just like the 1933 is the "Heil" (you know...1933 Hitler rising to power etc... :) )

The amp was my Earforce (what a fucking beast!)
