You know that squeally noise that is so common in solos and stuff? How do you do that?

I think it's called a thumb pinch or something. Do you know what I'm talking about? Do I have to find examples? LT does it all the time on ARTP (I think).

Its a pain in the ass to do  (Unless you are Zakk Wylde :) )

Its easier if you have the distortion cranked up, and try to hit the string with your thumb at the same time as the pick hits it.

You probably have to change the pick position in your hand to do it properly. Turn on the amp, crank up the distortion and just keep hitting one string with your pick and thumb and you will get a random one eventually, then try and repeat it etc.
Thats how I did it, but I can only do them one at a time, not in any solos or riffs or anything, so this is a bit like learning skydiving from a crane operator really, isnt it? ;)

:D

I've found that it has a lot to do with where you hit the string, in relation to the note that you are playing... it's hard to explain though.

Actually, now that harmonics has been mentioned, it all makes sense, including how it relates to the note being played. Curse you, engineering background, curse you to hell!

it's really easy ,
you just need to learn it in the sence that you get to play every note you do in a different picking style , so that you can get the hang of it ....
Zak does every second fucking note with a harmonic lmao lol

but really , just keep doing it till you are used to it ,
depending on wher eyou pick "clos to the neck or the bridg" you get a different frequency resonce to it , high or low pitch ....

it fucks you up if you pick the wrong way and you get a higher note that you nee lol .... or lower lol ....
i love my whamy bar , i can make it squeel like there is no tomorow lmao lol ..... just have your amp loud enough to make it last longer " and should warn the nighbours i think" lol

hmmmmm, pinched harmonics........*drool*

Pinched harmonics are great. i find it depends on the type of pick you have. You do need a point on it, but it doesn't have to be that much of a point, just enough (this you find out by practice, i can't tell you how much "enough" is). if, like me, you get "attached" to your pick and don't want to change it until it's been worn to a tiny shred, you will find it hard to get PH's unless you've just started using a new pick, and even then i find that it normally needs to be worn down with a bit of playing first.

Also, once you start hitting them, don't stop. keep practicing at them. i went through a stage where i didn't use them much a few months back 'cos i was concentrating on a new song i was trying to learn. now i have trouble hitting them, although it might just be 'cos my picks worn down too much and i need to change it.

1 more thing, picking hand. when i play them i find that i have to roll my picking hand away from the string, almost like you're digging a hole and your throwing a shade-ful of dirt away once you've gotten one. it's not so exageratted, but its kind sublte. i also find that i have the roll my thumb down on the pick so theres enough of the flesh sticking past the pick to hit the PH. like i said before, though, i can't tell you how much "enough" is, practice will let you know.

anyways! if any of that helps you, then good! if not then sorry for messing up your head. ;)

Hope you can enjoy endless hours of making your guitar squeal just by stroking it in the right way (sounds better if you're guitar is named and you consider it a "she", then you get "make her squeal by stroking her in the right way". )

S'okay, I got it sorted (kinda). At least, I've figured out how it works, I've just gotta figure out how to do it over and over again. It's probably that whole practice deally thing rearing it's ugly head again.

Thanks all!

dude , it's the only thing that makes you good ...
how do you think i ended up with Dark Order before ?? lol
i can show you some shit that you
ll go WOW at lmao ....
i play at least for a cuple of hours aday , some along to my cds , mostly just go mad and try different things and use lots of different ways to do the same thing over and over ....
picking style and speed , harmonics , and dive bombs , complex riffs and notes , sweep picking , tap , and other shit , geez i can go and on about the stuff that i go through lol ...
and trying to program some nice delays into the rack is a pain lol ..

Best of all , is finding someone to jam along with , you learn from one another , and helps you for when you get a band together .... attitude wise lol ....

gosh , i have a bad one of those lmao

Practice (or practise, i can never tell with the spelling thingey) is so much fun! I love to play guitar, so for me practice does NOT suck. I normally try to play guitar for at least an hour a day, i used to be up at 2 hours, but i don't really manage it nowadays. Everytime i play guitar i go away to my own little world where all there is is music, and it's only music i make. that little world is great. anyone how plays guitar and loves to play guitar will get there sooner or later. when you're there, nothing else matters. time has no meaning, only timing. volume has no meaning, body has no meaning. life is music, music is life. when you practice, there is nothing that matters except that note follows note follows note. to kind of quote Aces High:

"Play, live to play, play to live, play or die"

thats what its like for me, anyways. the more i practice, the more i love it, the more i love it the more i practice. the more you practice, the better you get and the more you love it.

Filthy students, with all that spare time. Here's what I suggest. GO GET A JOB AND MOVE OUT OF HOME! Then we'll see how much time you have for practice.

Filthy good-for nothings....

Damn straight phloggy, but I live at home and I still hate practice. You know whose fault it is? My stupid parents for not forcing me to play guitar all the time when I was a kid and letting me enjoy my youth :(

Always blame the Parents lmao ....
my dad wanted me to be an artist like him , but i didn't ...
i heared manowar when i was like 9-10 , and that was it ,,
i knew what i wanted to be lmao .....
i only been serious about pratise for the last 6 years ..
and went through hell between Drums and Guitars lol ....
but yeah ....
crank up Divine Intervention and play to it till your hands nearly fall off lol .....

Well, I can't add any more than everyone else has added - pinch harmonics (sometimes called pick harmonics) is mainly what you hear, but there's also tap harmonics (where you tap the string usually 12 frets higher than the note you're fretting really quickly to trigger one off), touch harmonics (where you hit a note and then touch a string somewhere along it which triggers one) or natural harmonics (where you lightly touch a string somewhere along it and pick it with your other hand).

A lot of the big screams you hear on our new album are in fact natural harmonics on the G string around 2nd fret and then whammy bar dived from there! Very effective! :)
