I've been to two so far, and probably another tomorrow.
The first was a student-organized walkout two or three weeks ago, with a march downtown and rally in front of City Hall. I walked, I spoke at the rally in favor of intelligent discussion instead of just telling pro-war people to fuck off, I avoiding getting arrested. The cops were great at that one, possibly because it was during a big police cover-up scandal and there was an interim chief running things. The only arrests were for a bunch of people lying in the street, and there was no violence; that was surprising to a lot of people because it was organized and carried out by teenagers. And everyone knows teenagers just want to break things and cut class, right? Right?
The last one, yesterday, was a bit more aggressive, but the whole point was to shut down the downtown area so that business as usual could not go on. I was mostly there writing down my observations, but I chanted somewhat. People were mostly non-violent, just blocking roads and doors, although some of the Black Bloc Anarchist dumbasses were breaking things and even pulling one motorist out of his car and attacking him. Dipshits ruin the peace movement.
The cops were using very Vietnam-era tactics; for instance, a number of people were blocking the street. The cops formed up and began marching forward, ordering people to move aside. Then, they suddenly broke into a run and encircled people who were trying to get to the side of the street. One of them was my friend's ex-girlfriend, who was in the process of getting off the street. The cops kept anyone from leaving the circle, then arrested them for not clearing the street.
A mounted policeman swung his baton at two protesters yelling obscenities, knocking them to the ground. According to my friend Ben, who's not much of a crazed radical and thus trustworthy in this scenario, a baton-armed cop hit two women standing in the street and peacably refusing to move. That's DEFINITELY not standard procedure.
