A site where people acctually respond!

Okay, well I should probobably sttart by listing a couple of my favorite bands

Helstar
Slayer
Arcturus(from what I've heard so far... just started with them)
Some amon amarth

I feel so unnconnected with the metal underground....

I don't really care if it's death metal or "extreme" like that... I don't know. I hate death metal bands which just scream jibber jabber all the time. Jibber jabber... anyway. So... um... yeah.

Try some German thrash; Kreator, Sodom, Destruction.
Try some Emperor.
I dunno. You don't give me much to go on; which Arcturus album? Which Amon Amarth? Which Slayer?

If you dig Arcturus, check out Borknagar. Not to say they're musically similar, but the singer of Arcturus sang on one album with Borknagar, so you might want to check that out. The album is Quintessence. If you like that record, check out their other stuff.

Also, for some reason I think you would like Amorphis. They have a number of good records:
The Karelian Isthmus
Tales From the Thousand Lakes
Elegy
Tuonela
Eclipse
Silent Waters

So many people seem to think The Karelian Isthmus and Tales From the Thousand Lakes are the only ones worth listening to. I think Eclipse and Silent Waters are awesome if you just want great choruses and catchy riffs. It kinda reminds me of the way in which Darkthrone have evolved.

Eclipse and Silent Waters are both killer records. Their sound evolved, that's all there is to it. You're right, the songs on those albums do have awesome riffs and very catchy choruses. And Tomi is a great lead singer.

The only thing I would gripe about on those two albums is sometimes some variation would flesh out things wonderfully...for example the synth solo in 'House of Sleep' where there's just it and the drums is awesome, and really brings more shades and atmosphere to what the casual listener might otherwise hear as a wall of noise the first few listens. Just some more 'light and dark' from the band would be cool, a little more space between the instruments sometimes, more of an airy feel to expand the richness of the music and so it doesn't seem like they play it safe all the time.

Yeah, I get what you mean with the space between instruments.

The one thing I'm worried about is that the next album will sound just like the past two. As much as I like them I do forget which songs are on Eclipse and which are on Silent Waters.

You think everyone would like Amorphis.

Everyone should like later Amorphis anyway

Exactly.

Amorphis and Kiuas are two solid, awesome bands. I don't understand why some people don't like them.

I do get what OCI means about the new records, though. They do sound like they play it safe sometimes. I think the potential's there, but they've realized that they nailed a formula for making killer songs. They might just be afraid to branch out a bit, or something. I also hope the next record doesn't sound just like Silent Waters.

Don't get why people don't like Kiuas though. ;)

Kiuas is like........... I dunno, it just doesn't sound completely real to me, for some reason. It sounds like they're a pretty good Finnish euro-power metal band at heart, but they're trying to mix in 'heavier elements' out of insecurity or something. I realize that sounds audacious and probably is not accurate at all, so don't get me wrong it's no accusation or anything. It's just what it reminds me of, certain American stuff like Iced Earth which is trying to be so so so so metal by having influence A and element B show up everywhere, but just ends up sounding sort of empty.

My idea of the perfect Amorphis album is something with the burning hooks and feel of 'Silent Waters' but also blended with some longer, more epic song structures and more light/dark atmospheres and instrumentation, something that can show Opeth how it's done.

Everyone should like later Amorphis anyway

I don't.

might as well be saying Mozart, or The Beatles, or Slipknot...a lot of people agree some artist is awesome, but hey, if someone doesn't like spicy food, it doesn't matter how good the spicy food is, they're not going to like it.
