You should have criticised SA's lyrics instead of their music. The Ayn Rand influence is the worst part of the band. But forget about that, listen a few more times - the music isn't that far removed from Fates Warning or Watchtower. If you understand those bands aren't about 'time signature acrobatics', you should appreciate SA

I can't really get into the vocals of Spiral Architect.

Borknagar is a solid band. My personal favorite is The Olden Domain. Excellent song arrangements and structure. Beautiful guitar work. I really like Garm's BM rasp, but the almost operatic style of "clean" sounds too much like a theatrical vocal experiment. If not for that, this is 5/5 in my book.
