Hello,

I'm getting a little bit of cash, and besides saving as usual, I'm gonna buy some must-have. So here is for the moment my wishlist, prices are in euros.

- DAW : Reaper, personnal : 50€, OK (will go commercial the day I'll start to earn money !)
- HP : Genelec 8020A 400€ the pair used
- Treatment : for around 160€ I can get 12 x 60cm/60cm/5cm (5cm=2 inches) of Auralex Absorption plates. That makes around 4 sq m. I KNOW you can build cheap treatment, but I just can't, i have no place for it, nor time, and that will never be lost. Maybe a few more foam to put the HP on.
- EQ : 0€, stock ones would be fine eventhough I just loved the Flux EpureII workflow (but its around 390€) and sounded better in my tests than stock ones.
- Comp : ? A free one ? A cheap one ?
- Limiter : ? A free one, with GClip, or Voxengo Elephant 90€ ?
- Slate's EX : around 100€, less if there is conversion from $100 to euros
- Drum replacer : JS free one, or Apptrigga
- Drum Vst sampler : S2.0 should be cool but I'm not sure this is a good idea for a starting point, and I would surely better do the job replacing the drums so it would be cool to have a vst drum with good cymbals (and I know slate is gonna make that happen !)
- for guitars, I have what I need, and Nick Crows + your impulses do the job for my personnal demos !

So what do you think of that ? I'm pretty decided to get HP + treatment, but I always prefer to think first. I heard the genelec and just loved that sound, so I know what I'm buying, but maybe you have better ideas ? (I add a second time i loved them :) ) What about auralex plates ? And as you see, I'm just lost when it's about compressors. That is a critical point, each one has its sound, but I can't get anyone to be my favourite.

Eh, I'd avoid the 8020's, they're just too damn small to get any kind of natural full bass (I say natural cuz there are ways of tricking people, but eh...) My vote would be Yamaha HS80s, or Tannoy Reveal 5A's if you don't need the extra bass of the Yamahas. Reaper's stock EQ and comp are fine for me, but I would DEFINITELY invest in Elephant, good god does it dominate. As for a drum VSTi, I don't have enough experience to say, but while I don't like the snare and kick sounds of S2.0, it seems to have the most realistic cymbals, so that'd be my vote! On the other hand, Steven Slate EX is so freakin' cheap...

Oh I was thinking... EX will come with its vst so maybe I just don't care about S2.0, but my thinking is.. Will EX come with cymbals ?

I'm gonna check the monitors you mentionned, maybe you're right. As I have no experience about monitors I thought the 8020 would fit but I have no other experience.

Yeah, EX does come with cymbals, but what I've heard of the SSD3.0 cymbals hasn't impressed me too much (though I haven't heard many clips, so I can't be certain!) I know I'll be buying EX soon, simply because of the cost!

And yeah, as for monitors, the Tannoys don't have quite as much bass as the HS80s, but while I haven't directly A/B'ed 'em, I really think they're more detailed with better stereo imaging (simply on account of them being the same price here but with lower-powered amps and smaller drivers, so a quality over quantity thing). Here's some reviews:

I was considering the KRK VXT6's that the dude on gearslutz mentions, but they were too expensive for me (and I can't stand that yellow cone ;)) Also heard that for the Gen 2 Rokit's KRK has seriously stepped up their game from the apparently pretty bad originals!

I thought I had edited this post : what about a good concession : for 400 euros, the yamahas + Tannoy ts8 sub HP, right here at only a few kms from where I am the weekend. The world is sometimes little isnt it ?

EDIT : as you seem ready to buy slates banks too, I can't remember : is it a better deal about metal than the LE kit that is now cheaper than before ? I remember that Slate said in the EX version there will be a lot of good kits for metal but not sure.

Another thing is that I'll certainly be living in an appartment, with 2 friends (and a lot of neighbours). So I don't really know if I should get on mid/high quality with the genelec and later take a sub for when I wanna mix the bass, or the set of yamahas with the sub, or without (250 euros), or another system of the same range of price.

Anyone knows well The Rocket compressor from Stillwell ? I remember sillwell plugs were wonderful, and this one seems cool, with sidechaining allowed too.

If you get the Yamaha HS80s, you definitely will not need a sub, trust me! And I wouldn't mind if my Tannoys had a bit more bass for casual music listening (they only have 5" cones, unlike the 8" on the Yamahas), but for mixing I prefer less bass, since I find bass too flattering to mixes! (especially bass and kick, you feel them with a lot of bass, but often you go to a bass-weak system and you can barely hear the bass and kick :() And yeah, I would totally go for the Slate LE kit if you can, I'm pretty sure it has everything EX will have and more!

Cause dunno if you are from kvr, but it has a price reduction to $129 for KVR users, and it seems there are only a few limited license keys left, so I may hit the button this weekend... :)

Do the 8020 really lack bass ? A lot of people said that surprisingly, due to its conception, it sounds powerful enough in its bass, and that was my impression (but a monitor-noob impression though). Anybody did try or had them tested ?

No, it's somewhat linked. It comes with REAplugs, a list of plugins, and JS plugins, that if I'm right are related to Stillwell, but aren't the same plugins. These all are basic plugins with mainly no GUI but do the job pretty well. JS plugins are plugin written with a specific language, easy to learn, and anyone can write them (its just a txt file code). I think they are beginning to make a GUI for them. That simply means reaper comes with a set of plugs that work quite well (there's even a drum replacer or a FTT analyser !) for free, and it's still developping.

I like it quite a lot actually. Its has a great set of presets to get you in the ballpark, and the impetus adds some solid state emulated distortion for a distressor type feel.

Major tom works great for parallel compression as well.

Yes. I've demoed them at the Genelec factory in their well designed listening room along with almost every other professional monitor they currently produce apart from the even smaller 6010's, and they were the only pair that absolutely needed the sub. Even the company rep admitted they weren't doing their best without one.

HOLY FUCK, and now the 8020's are $500 in the US? Fuck that in the hellhole, good god (though I guess we deserve it cuz of your Mesa prices :heh: )

Okay thank you then. I think I'm gonna give The Rocket a try, again.

So i'll forget Genelec, the 8030 are still too expensive for the moment. I love genelec sound but I'll think about the Yamahas or the Tannoy, I already send PMs on a french important website for audiogeeks. That must be a good idea.

It's 400 euros the pair but... used. New, its the same price (with conversion).

We loose at guitar and amp prices, sometimes it's doubled. (I bought my ESP for 1000 euros, but in shops its 1600 ) But I win at plugin prices, because prices are in $ and 1€=$1.3! mwahHAHAHAHA :)

The Auralex panels would probably work well for everything above 100hz but below that I doubt they'll make a big difference, at least not unless you want to spend a lot of money. I'd suggest you take a look at some easy to build DIY stuff, after all. At least for corner traps to supplement your Auralex.
