Any places to visit in Atlanta

I have no idea what to do here. I wanted to go to Oakland Cemetery (I'm studying to be a funeral director so this interests me) but I hear it's in a not-so-nice neighborhood.

for next time, in case I stay a few days - any recommendations? too lazy to look stuff up so i am asking locals - thanks

I'm not a local (and I'm not even attending PP this year, unfortunately) but in 2003 I spent a whole week in Atlanta (centered on PP4, of course) and I tried out a lot of the tourist spots. A few things I remember:

World of Coca Cola: as lame as everyone says. That doesn't mean you shouldn't go, but don't get your hopes up. My favorite part, strangely, was looking at some of the old ads from the 1940s.

CNN: Moderately interesting, but I didn't feel it was worth the money.

High Museum: Argh, two-thirds of it was shut down when I visited. It was still ok, though, so I suspect if all of it is open, this might be a good thing. And the location is perfect if you're staying in midtown.

Atlanta History Center: This fascinated me, and I had to leave early and reluctantly after 4 hours in order to get to ProgPower day 1. This is in Buckhead and within easy walking distance of one of the MARTA stops.

Braves: this was several days after the fest, but I got to see the Braves beat the Phillies. To tell the truth, while this was fun, it wasn't any funner than seeing my local minor league team (Albuquerque Isotopes) and a lot more expensive.

Don't know about that, but the food sure was good when we went last year. A weird juxtaposition of styles, maybe, but good nonetheless. It's a bit of a drive, though.

I think it's absolutely hilarious that they have photos of a bloody Abdullah all over the walls in the area people eat in. :D

Abby wasn't there the one time I was there. *sigh*

A couple of suggestions for a day trip would be to visit the Cyclorama and Zoo Atlanta. Since they are both in Grant Park, you could do them in succession.

Responses to what's been said before:
I go to Georgia Tech, so I'm somewhat familiar with the area.
I've heard good things about the Vortex, and I keep meaning to go there.
Ted's Montana grill is very good, but a tad expensive.
Quality aside, I hear Fogo de Chao is a very touristy place. Never been there.
If you want cheap college student food (and alcohol), I recomend El Amigo on Howell Mill Red and Giorgio's Pizza on Collier Rd.

Someone mentioned liquor stores: Mac's on Peachtree is good, near GT campus.

Never been to the Coke museum, so I can't contribute to the heated debate on that subject.

Georgia Tech is playing UConn on Saturday.. crap. I just looked it up and it's a night game, so that's a no go.

(btw.. first post, and all that jazz)

If you want cheap and you like spicy go to EATS on Ponce... they have either Jerk Chicken or Pasta... the Jerk Chicken is the best i have ever had.

I am a georgia tech grad myself. In matter of fact I used to live right on Collier by Giorgios. I never tried it though b/c I heard soso things about it from friends. I'm not a big pizza fan anyway.

I also don't think that the El Azteca is very good. If you are going to get Mexican food around the Howell Mill area, you HAVE to go to Nuevo Lorado on Chattahoochee right off Howell Mill. They have 2 walls covered with Best Mexican in Atlanta Awards that they have won over the years:
http://www.nuevolaredocantina.com

The vortex is awesome. I work next door (almost), so I go all the time.
Noodle across the street is also really great; however, I don't care for Little Azios.
If you want $1 sushi in a loud fun atmosphere, the Ru San's at Piedmont is great. It might be walkable from PP if it is a nice night and you don't mind the walk.

Let's see, good restaurants in walking distance from Earthlink:
Twisted Taco - Trendy tacos, 12th street, http://www.twistedtaco.com
Wild Curry - Vietnamese/Thai, 10th and Peachtree
Fuego - Tapas, 14th and Crescent
Tamarind - pricey Thai, one of the best in the USA say Zagat - 14th and Spring
There are a ton of others, including around 10 at Colony Square at 14th and Peachtree. I haven't been able to try them all.

There are a ton of restaurants in Atlanta; my friends and I have been trying a different restaurant every Thursday since January, and who knows how many years it will take before we run out. We tend to try different ethnic places: Persian, Greek, Bangladeshi, Indian, Lebanese, Malaysian, Peruvian, Ethiopian, Korean, Cuban, Caribbean, etc...

So, if anyone wants a list of the great ethnic restaurants in ATL let me know :)

Wow Robin, I live in Atlanta, I am going to have to get wtih you... I have tried some of those places but you have tried alot.. :)
thanks for the ideas.

Wow... That list of restaurants is impressive, indeed. I stayed at the Sheraton last time and Colony Square was rather underwhelming. Didn't venture out on 14th too much - sounds like I missed out.

Yeah... any ethnic, way out there suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Edit: BTW... 10 & which Peachtree for Wild Curry? And 12th and what for the tacos?

Edit2: One more question - is car/cab the only way to get to Stone Mountain? Las time someone drove into town to say hello and he drove to and from Stone Mountain. Should we get a rental? Are there buses/shuttles? Thanks!

Sure :), my friends and I were thinking of starting a website with reviews at some point. We really should...

Wild Curry is on the North side of 10th right before the Peachtree street that is not West Peachtree. I have only tried the Pho, and it is good, but not as good as the real authentic places up Buford Hwy. I'm not sure how the rest of the food is.

Check out twisted Taco's website(http://www.twistedtaco.com) to see an exact location. It is not really at any cross streets.

I would recommend getting a car if you really want to see Atlanta. Our public Transportion sucks and doesn't go near Stone Mountain. All the really good ethnic restaurants in Atlanta are spread out and require a car to get to.

If you decide to get a car, let me know what ethnicites you are most interested to try(including ones that I didn't list) and I can tell you where to go. I can't seem to find any russian or polish restaurants at all though...

Actually, for those people from non diverse area, driving up Buford Hwy and going to Buford Hwy. farmers market is definitely something I recommend doing.

Trying and cooking different kinds of food is my favorite hobby; just a little bit more than listening to music :)

I never said El Amigo was GOOD, I said it was fairly cheap, and all the GT students go there. They card now, after losing their liquor licensce for about the third time, which is unfortunate. (I'm still 20). I think El Monterey is better than El Amigo. It's a new place on Northside, right next to the brightly illuminated gay bar Swinging Richard's. You can't miss it. :p My roommates love Mexican, and I've been trying to wean them off El Amigo, so I think we'll check out Nuevo Lorado.

Giorgio's absolutely does not give a crap about carding (at least when I was there), because I suspect they are run by the Italian Mafia. :p The pizza is good, the pitchers are cheap, and the owner is pretty cool.

Rocky Mountain Pizza on Hemphill on the border of GT is good. They have good specialty pizzas and all kinds of shot specials.

Ru San's is great. I've only been there once, though.

You haven't seen horrid public transportation until you've seen what we have here in Vegas. If I were to take a bus to work it'll take me three hours to get there. It's 20 minutes on the freeway. Nothing makes sense.

Yeah, we'll probably rent a car for at least Sunday, maybe Monday, as well.

As far as ethnic stuff... That Vietnamese may hit the spot. As long as they have escargot soup. There is a Vietnamese mall in Falls Church, VA that is teeming with little restaurants one of which serves the aforementioned soup.

Never heard of a Bangladeshi place - that may be interesting. Ethiopian is good. Good Mediterranean/Middle Eastern restaurants are always a treat.

Out of curiosity: any Bulgarian restaurants? That's where I'm from originally. Vegas has one that's fairly decent, but overpriced.

Thanks! :)

I don't know about escargot soup, but the best Vietnamese restaurant I've been to is the Saigon Cafe:
http://atlanta.citysearch.com/profile/12143135/duluth_ga/saigon_cafe.html

It is awesome and crowded with Vietnamese people; however it is all the way out in Duluth, so it might be too far. If it is, Pho Bac is decent; their broth is quite flavorful: http://atlanta.citysearch.com/profile/3035758/chamblee_ga/pho_bac.html

Both Vietnamese places are super cheap... I can get 2 meals for less than $6 at Pho Bac (1 Ex. large Pho to go!) :)

Bangladeshi food is extremely similar to Indian food, and Panahar is one of my absolute favorite restaurants.... http://www.panahar.com/
It is amazing.

For Ethiopean food, Meskerem(http://www.meskerem-atlanta.com/) is my favorite, one of my favorite restaurants, and cheap. However, it appears that they are in the middle of moving, so I don't know if they will be open yet. I love the Tibis Fitfit, honey wine, and the vegetables. If they are closed, Queen of Sheba is also pretty good (http://www.qsheba.com/).

If you have $50 per person to spend and like fire twirling belly dancing, Imperial Fez is an amazing Moroccan Restaurant. (http://www.imperialfez.com/). I went there to celebrate landing my job a few years back, but haven't had the $ to go back.

The Mediterranean Grill has my favorite Gyros and is as cheap as fast food:
http://atlanta.citysearch.com/profile/11654740/decatur_ga/mediterranean_grill.html

And if you want to sit on the floor, smoke a Hookah, and eat Turkish food Cafe Istanbul is great(http://www.cafeistanbulatlanta.com/).

Right, so I need to put this stuff on a website somewhere :)

I don't know of any Bulgarian places, sorry. We don't seem to have a lot of Europeans north of Greece.
