Im a big fan of Dells.
I have the Latitude D-800 Dell and I love *love* LOVE it.
I'm pretty pissed at Dell right now. I bought an Inspiron 9100 about two years ago, a $3000 computer (P4 3.2ghz w/ HT, mobile radeon 9800, 1920x1200 resolution LCD). It's basically an XPS without the XPS logo, etc, and a few hundred cheaper.
After a year of having it, it just died, and would power up again. Sent it in under warranty and they replaced the motherboard. Seven months later, now out of warranty, it died the same way. Same symptoms/behavior. This time it's costing me $300 to fix. They said they would replace the mobo again, and even charged my card for it. I sent it in, and when I got it back, they just replaced the RAM modules and not the mobo. Ran for about 15 minutes then died the same way (it's not a problem with the RAM, as I tried two different sets of RAM modules in it before even sending it in).
So now I had to send it in a 3rd time and I'm waiting to get it back from their l33t <cough> service center in Memphis, TN. Of course, I'm worried that it'll just die again in another 6-8 months again after I get it back.
I think next lappy I buy will not be from Dell. Hopefully I'll be able to find one with the features I require, from a company which doesn't outsource technical support to India. And hopefully one which does repairs here in the Silicon Valley. Yeah I know, good luck.
Perhaps it's just the particular model I got. When it works, I really love it, but I don't think a computer this expensive should just die every 7-8 months and require repair. If it dies a third time, I'm going to see if I can get Dell to simply replace it with another model, or refund my money or something. But I doubt I'll have much luck getting them to doing that. Too bad there's no "lemon law" for computers.
Anyway, you guys may want to consider my experience before buying a Dell.
