Apparent band/album preferences of UM members vs. common metalheads

I agree but my point was that people commonly see technical playing and write it off as wanking.

Often times yes, but I think this is found more often in modern bands who focus more on their technicalities than their riffcraft. Take a band like Atheist. Technical, yes, but their riff work is excellent and the focus of their sound. Then take a band like Brain Drill, technical as hell, but absolutely weak and plastic sounding with zero grasp on how to write a song.

What are the opinions of Septic Flesh around here? I don't see them brought up much. I just recently got into them, and can't stop listening.

Septic Flesh are great! Communion is a damn fine album.

Yeah, Communion raped my ears last year....couldn't get enough of that one. The newest one is ok, I've only listened to it once. I haven't hearde Sumerian Demons which I've heard is good as well, but shit I'm fine with Communion. Can't wait to see them this summer!! They have this great blend of Behemoth-esque brutality, atmosphere/symphonic elements of dimmu (and late behemoth) and their own blend of awesomeness

And although I'm not in love with AAL as I've said, I wouldn't consider it technical wankery, if even if there is a lot of technical wizardry going on it's much more tasteful and used in different ways than straight up shreddage

:kickass:

True, they're definitely a good band, Communion sounds just great. Summerian Daemons is even better. Not sure about the reason, but the band's name is Septicflesh now.

I didn't like that AAL song, great musicians but it feels like something is missing. BTW I enjoy technical DM and stuff.

in agreement.

Meh, I enjoyed the AAL song but I'd like to say I've got pretty decent taste in metal.

I'm just also a huge fan of fast finger work by Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Frank Gambale, Guthrie Govan, so that's probably where I garnered my liking in AAL.

I love guys like Satch and Vai but I can't stand their compositions. Now Gambale is a badass, although most of his stuff is froo froo fusion, but Guthrie Govan is hands down probably one of the best guitarists out there right now. only person that beats him is Shawn Lane, but he's dead :(

Count me as one who enjoyed the song. I probably couldn't get into the whole album because I tend to not really care for vocals-free metal. I mean, Pelican is great, but they're not even metal.

what is Metal?
as a non-guitarist/non-musician-of-any-sort, I don't really see what makes a soft/simplistic/happy band like Led Zepplin or Black Sabbath 'Metal' while this or that other comparable band is only 'Rock'. Judging by Metal I'm used to hearing, it would seem like a whole lot of Metal bands aren't metal, and I dunno if Pelican is any worse.

Maybe they were going for something along the lines of "If you listen to this long enough it will drill into your brain" because they do give me a headache physically after a while.

I really dont mind them in small doses though, I actually bought quantum catastrophe and dont regret it. (and no, I really dont consider them very death metal)

They're more an exercise in extremity. Answering the question of "just HOW technical can a death band get?" Hence the nonstop barrage of weedlies, 8 string bass licks, blasts and various other shenanigans. As such, I love 'em.

both albums are cool, i prefer Apocalyptic Feasting ... which i think you guys might actually like more if you gave it a chance.

edit: i wasnt a fan of Cannibal Corpse a while ago, but id have to say they're a very solid band overall. I prefer their earlier works with Barnes ... i have the Butchered At Birth, ToTM, and The Bleeding cd's.

I have every cannibal corpse album but the latest... I do love the band in general. dont really have much of a preference in vocalist, it's all solid death metal, some of the early albums verging on brutal death metal.
