Just got this; anyone else think this mix sounds ridiculously imbalanced? IMO the drums and guitars are way the hell too soft (and the kick especially is practically inaudible, and the snare quite wimpy) compared to the bass, vox, and synths - did Vortex mix this by any chance? Music is cool so far, but man what a wimpy mix IMO :(

I kinda dig the mix because it fits the moods of the album perfectly. I agree that it sounds kinda wimpy, but a "normal" metal mix wouldn't work for their music imo.
I don't know if you're familiar with their earlier albums, but every album they've done has sounded very unique, bot musically and mix-wise.

I've only heard The Sham Mirrors previously, but I really love it, and at least it has an audible kick and guitars! (and just feels more balanced in general IMO) Anyway, I'm sure I'll get used to the mix on the new one, but it just really bugged me :erk:

Sideshow Symphonies was a huge dissapointment both musically and production wise :(

Never could get into the other albums but The Sham Mirrors is just pure win.. specially the ambient part of For to End Yet Again <3.

At first I thought the production was shit.. but now I kinda have a hard time imagining it sounding any different

/slightly OT

You should really check out La masquerade Infernale, Marcus.
imo, it's their best album.

+1
Aspera Hiems is also good, more black metal than the later stuff and has some really good guitar solos. If you like something more experimental and trippy, Disguised Masters is also excellent, actually my favorite. Then compare Sideshow Symphonies to those and prepare to be dissapointed :D

When it came out, the band said that the mix was fucked. Cannot remember what was the thing bothering them, but they said there would be new corrected version, but that never arrived...

I love their music but don't like the mixes that much. Their sound is completely unique to them though. I always recognize Arcturus immediately.

Or stop listening Acturus full lenght and watch her awesome DVD:)

It was just the mastering that bothered them. The second track, Shipwrecked Frontier Pioneer, is considerably quieter than the other tracks, and it has a loud pop just before the end.

Ah, ok, I remember wrong.

Didn't really care myself as it was even bigger dissapointment than what The Sham Mirrors was when it was released.
