Audio Technica AT2020's -VS- MXL 603's

For a pair of overheads for recording a drum kit.

Same price. $99 each. AT is a large diaphram design. MXL is the pencil type.

I'm leaning towards the Glynn Johns method with an Audix D6 on the kick and a SM57 on the snare.

If you have used either one, Which do you prefer and why?

I've got an AT2020, and I think it's pretty decent for a cheap condenser. I've never used the MXL603 though.

2020 is actually not a large diaphragm, just looks like one. I don't think they're a good investment.

Spend a bit more and you have many more options. AT 2035, 3035 if you can find them are my budget picks.

I like the Behringer B5 for overheads. They are in the same price category and available as a matched pair.

I'm not sure that the B5s actually come in a matched pair (unless a dealer has some sort of package - but then they wouldn't be a matched pair). The C2s do however.

Why not spend a bit more on a matched Rode NT5 pair? They are not that more expensive and are used a lot by people on this forum. I'm GASsing for a pair right at this moment, hehe...

I just picked up a set of MXL 993s, which I hear are kinda similar to the 603s. (I think the 993 has more high end around 8k). I should be doing my first test run with them as overheads on Tues. I can post clips when I can.

**edit. I should mention I bought these only to pick up some cymbals. I will be drumagoging the rest of the kit.

To the OP, I have some clips from some preproduction drums I did with MXL 993s which are on sale at MF for $130 for a pair right now. Pretty happy with the results actually. I can email you them if you want to hear.
