*cross post from the Blind Guardian forums*

Ok so I remember seeing these guys open for Symphony X and Blind Guardian back at the end of 2002 in NYC and I thought they were a terrible screamo band.

Anyway, I've realized they've been getting incredibly popular in the US now (ironically, much more so than either SymX or BG), so much that they're #1 on MTV's Total Request Live. More than 1 of my friends had been saying how good their new album is, and how it sounds nothing like their old stuff. I gave it a listen and i have to say Im incredibly impressed. The vocals are all melodic now, there are some genuinely heavy, very *metal* riffs, and the guitarists and drummer are very talented, and yet they still have a very punk sound at the same time (notably in the choruses). I'm even reminded of Dream Theater in some parts of their songs.

Anyway, I do have to say that as far as a "mainstream" band goes, these guys are incredibly enjoyable. I'd reccomended them especially to a powermetal fan, since the clean vocals and happy punky choruses would probably appeal to them.

Yeah. The vocals have their moments, though most of the time they are whiny as hell. Like i said before maeng, I'm happy they are getting attention because it's better seeing kids wearing Avenged Sevenfold shirts over Korn or Limp Bizkit shirts.

They have some ups and downs.

Ups
-Their guitarrist(s) aren't that bad.
-Their drummer got better with the new album
-They have some pretty heavy shit

Downs
-They're mainstream :OMG: jk.
-Their singer sonds whiny at times, like Emo singers.
-Bat Country is the corniest music video I've ever seen in my life.

Being mainstream isn't a down, asshole.

I saw them at that NYC show and also thought they were crap. During their set I was just wandering around the venue, but then the pop director at my old radio station asked if I wanted a copy of Waking the Fallen because they received two in the mail. I decided what the hell and said "sure." Who am I to pass up free music? Anyway, I was stunned by how much better the cd was than their show.

Personally, I like Waking the Fallen more than City of Evil. It does have its rough spots and not as tight in the songwriting, but has better vocals and more interesting musical moments.

On a side note, before recording City of Evil the singer blew his vocal chords. That is why he sounds so different between the two.

My old band was gonna cover Unholy Confessions, until we realized that we were going for a Prog Metal thing than an A7X cover would've gotten us.
